Letters
Continued from page B-1
"What if the soldier fell in love
through these letters but what
he didn't know, is the girl who
he's writing to isn't the girl who's
writing back," she said. "It calls
into question how much you can
actually know about someone
from a letter."
McMorris said she first
thought of writing a movie script
because of her past experiences
as a TV host and actress. How-
ever, despite having no creative
writing experience, McMorris
soon started writing her book.
"It's easy to write when you
don't really know what you're
doing," she said. "I thought I
could tackle a book rather than
¢
a screenplay."
McMorris said that she had no
idea how hard the project would
be, or how long it would take.
"I was blissfully ignorant.
If I had known how hard the
craft was or what the industry
was like I would have run away
screaming," she said. "I started
writing this a little over five
years ago when I was pregnant
with my second child. For some
reason I thought I'd have a lot of
time."
Five years after beginning her
project, she said that she has
learned a lot about writing, and
a lot about her grandmother.
"(People who lived through
WWII) think they did nothing
special, and they're so humble
and there's so much to learn
from them," she said. "My grand-
mother worked at a battery fac-
tory and worked as a soda jerk
... She's gone through so much
in her life, this woman has sur-
vived world wars, she grew up
on a farm where her mother died
when she was 9 years old, she
raised a family, she walked up to
eight miles to school every day."
In the end, McMorris said the
whole project was worth it, and
today, she brings her children
to visit McPherren in Hoodsport
too.
"Letters from Home," comes
out on February 22. A portion
of all proceeds goes to "United
through Reading," A program
that records delployed members
of the military reading bedtime
stories to their children.
