Habitat
gets
$2oo,ooo
grant for
Shelton property
By NATALIE JOHNSON
Habitat for Humanity of
Mason County is getting set
to start work on their first
multi-unit housing project,
Schilling Park, on West
Franklin Street in Shelton,
thanks to a $200,000 grant
from Mason County.
Habitat plans to build
up to four duplexes, which
would include eight two- or
three-bedroom units.
Habitat staff said that
without such a grant, they
would not be able to get
such a large and expensive
project off the ground.
"To be able to do the in-
frastructure inside the city
is extremely expensive,"
said Kelly Zoldak, Habi-
tat for Humanity Mason
, County president. "Most of
our builds have been in the
county because we don't
have to do the same type of
infrastructure."
Zoldak said that hooking

are very expensive, espe-
cially for a non-profit like
Habitat.
"In order to be able to do
something in the city we
would have to have grant
money to do it," she said. "It
would take way too much
time for us to try to raise
$200,000."
The grant comes from
the county's 2060 funds,
collected through $10 docu-
ment charges at the county
auditor's office. It specifi-
cally is set aside to help
decrease homelessness in
Mason County by helping
fund multi-family housing
projects like this one.
This is Habitat of Mason
County's first multi-family
project, but it isn't a first for
Habitat for Humanity, said
Tammey Newton, Habitat
for Humanity Mason Coun-
ty executive director.
"We applied for our first
multi-family unit - there
are other habitats who do
multi-families, in the bigger
cities they do it more," New-
ton said.
That $200,000 is a lot of
money but is still only the
tip of the iceberg for what
Habitat needs to raise, to
Newton said.
"It's important to remem-
ber that we don't incur debt
when we build.., we're look-
ing at raising an additional
$480,000 to the $200,000
that we've already got," she
said. "This is, I think, the
largest fundraising project
that we have ever taken
on."
That $680,000 only in-
cludes the infrastructure
and materials to build the
house. All of the labor is do-
nated.
Habitat is also looking
for more volunteers to help
build this project and oth-
ers. Habitat gets all their
construction done through
volunteers, and in this case,
their architect is also work-
ing pro-bono.
Grant Foster, of Foster-
Williams Architects in Shel-
ton has donated his time to
design the project, Zoldak
said.
"We're working with a lo-
cal architect Grant Foster
who is working with us and
donating his time, so won-
derfully," she said. "He's
a fantastic architect, he's
been an integral part of the
process."
Habitat plans to start
building the units as soon
as their infrastructure is
done, which could be as ear-
ly as the beginning of next
year, construction manager
Henry Biernacki said.
"If we get the infrastruc-
ture done this year, we can
start putting through the
planning, with Fo |ter-Wil-,,
hams and go from there,
he said.
Habitat staff is hopeful
that they can get the project
done as soon as possible but
are also concerned about
raising all the funds they
need to complete the proj-
ect.
"It all depends on fund-
ing if we could get it all
done by 2013 that would be
fantastic, but we just don't
know," Zoldak said.

"We're looking for friends
of Schilling Park right now
who are ready, willing and
able to give monthly do-
nations," Newton said.
"There's lots of ways to
help. If you don't have cash
you can volunteer, you can
make lunches for the crew,
there's just lots of ways to
help."
