A f0ur-game 1B Coastal
League winning streak held
by the Mary M. Knight High
School boys basketball team
was snapped at Taholah
High School on Saturday in
a 57-51 loss.
The Owls (5-4, 4-1 1B
Coastal League) led after
the first quarter 14-12, but
were outscored 20-15 in the
second quarter.
"We got in a little foul
trouble there," said Owls
head Coach Tim Diggle. "My
big guys had to sit."
Mary M. Knight's scoring
leader, Scan Sexton, was
held to three points againt
the Chitwins (10-5, 5-0 1B
Coastal League).
"They were doubling and
tripling him," Diggle said.
"Just took him out of it. Too
much pressure for him I
think."
But Kyle Willey led the
Owls with 14 points in what
Diggle said was one of his
better games of the season.
"My guys off my bench
did well for me," Diggle said.
"But my main power is my
big guys."
Taholah used a mixture of
half-court press and three-
quarters court press to cre-
ate 28 turnovers against the
Owls.
"We would break the
press but we just lost con-
trol I guess," Diggle said.
Mary M. Knight coverted
only 15 out of 26 free throws,
in addition to struggling of-
fensively inside the paint.
"We just missed too many
free throws and layups in
crunch time," Diggle said.
"Can't win shooting that
low."
Even after losing first
place to Taholah, Diggle
found a moral victory in los-
ing by six points to a team
that has averaged winning
their other league games
by more than 20 points per
game.
"We played our best game
of the season, even though
we lost," Diggle said. "It's a
small bump. We'll get them
at home."
On Friday, the Owls de-
feated Wishkah Valley High
School at home, 48-37.
Sexton led the Owls with
15 points, The Owls were
outscored 10-4 in the third
quarter.

Meeting set to name North Mason
football stadium after Coach Pugh
By DEAN SIEMON
Former North Mason
High School football players
and other community mem-
bers have worked towards
renaming the football field
after former head coach Phil
Pugh.
After gaining support
from the school's Associated
Student Board and school
leadership team, a commu-
nity meeting has been sched-
uled at 6:30 p.m., Wednes-
day, March 2;'at~ the North

Pugh retired after the
2009 season after 27 seasons
as head coach of the football
team. He was also the head
coach for track and field for
22 years.
Mark Swofford, athletic
director at North Mason,
said a group of former play-
ers approached the North

members.
"He's the one that really
started everything," Swof-
ford said.
The school board revised
Policy 6970 and Procedure
6970B to "allow a path to
follow in attempting to re-
name the facility," Swofford
said.
"The criteria is now 25
years," Swofford said.
Swofford wrote in a press
release sent to the Journal
that the community meet-
ing is set to determine the
amount of support for hon-
oring the former Bulldogs'
coach in this honor.
Swofford said one of the
topics will be whether to
name only the football sta-
dium or the entire complex
which includes the track.
'TCould it be Phil Pugh
Stadium or Phil Pugh Com-
plex?" Swofford said ........
If necessary, NMHS prin-
cipal Chad Collins will pre-
pare the report to submit to
superintendent David Peter-
son.
According to the release,
once Peterson approves the
naming of the stadium, it
will be submitted as a rec-
ommendation to the school
board.
Swofford said if accepted,
the newly named stadium
would include a new en-
trance and ticket area to be
built in the summer.
"We would hope to have it
done by the start of the sea-
son," he said.
