Green Bay and Pittsburgh set for final showdown,
Journal staff challenge gets more interesting
By DEAN SIEMON
My friend said it best on
his Facebook account on
Sunday as he removed his
Chicago Bears hat after the
game and replaced it with
a Chicago Cubs cap with a
sigh.
"Let's go Cubs!" he ex-
claimed.
It was not the best week-
end for me, mostly because
Bears quarterback Jay Cut-
ler seemed to have given up
on the team as they lost 21-
14 to the Green Bay Packers
in the NFC Championship.
While it is revealed that
Cutler apparently suffered a
torn MCL, I still feel he had
no passion in the game as he
only threw for 80 yards in an

offensive unit that couldn't
take advantage of an Aaron
Rodgers interception.
But I want to send my
congratulations to the Pack-
ers, most importantly Rodg-
ors, who has been under the
shadow of Brett Favre and
has finally cemented his
own Lambeau Legacy.
Green Bay hasn't ap-
peared in the big game since
Maybe Rex Ryan should
have been his regular, loud-
mouthed self because the
whole nice Rex approach
didn't turn out well for the
Jets.
Maybe it is true that nice
guys finish last.
Now the biggest game of
the year pits two great de-
fenses against each other,
the Steel Curtain against
that removed Indianapolis
and New England in succes-
sion.
So who has more momen-
tum? I have to give an edge
to Pittsburgh, despite al-
most losing their 24-3 half-
time lead as the Jets scored
16 unanswered points.
I also don't see the rookie
sensation John Starks com-
piling many yards against
244 yards with two inter-
ceptions.
Then again, at this point,
the numbers don't matter
and it's going to come down
to not only which team
makes the least mistakes
but who takes advantage of
the key opportunities.
My pick for the Journal's
NFL playoff challenge will
also be based on the fact
Bay-Pittsburgh champi-
onship game being worth
five points, I decided to go
against the fact the Steelers
are favored and that I want
to at least not finish bottom
of the barrel in my own com-
petition.
Note: Points for last
week's picks were worth
three points each. Super
Bowl prediction worth five.
1998 when Favre was de-
feated by Hall of Fame quar-
terback John Elway and the
Denver Broncos.
Facing them are the
Pittsburgh Steelers, who
were able to hold off a late
rally from the New York
Jets to win the AFC Cham-
pionship 24-19.
the Pack Attack.
You could argue that
Green Bay has all of the mo-
mentum in the world after
going on the road to defeat
Philadelphia, Atlanta and
Chicago.
But Pittsburgh defeated
a talented Baltimore Ra-
vens squad and a Jets team
the top-ranked rushing de- that I have to prevent my-
fense.
Many will say the Pack-
ers were on fire entering the
postseason. But I feel there
might be some concerns of
offensive consistency.
Rodgers threw for three
touchdowns and 366 yards
at Atlanta and then only
self from finishing in last
place.
While Kelly Riordan
leads with eight points, fol-
lowed by Natalie Johnson
with seven, I stand in last
place with one point, behind
Kevan Moore's two.
