DIANNE ARNOLD "It's not as bad." SHIRLEY ERHART "They don't get equal pay." \ SHARON JOHNSON "Definitely." r i in By DIANE HUCKS Do you believe women are discriminated against in employment and pay? This was the Journal's question-of-the-week asked of people in downtown Shelton, and the response was overwhelmingly affirmative, especially where wages were concerned. Many felt the situation is improving. A few people said there was no discrimination in the Shelton area, although they thought there might be some elsewhere in the country. More men than women felt this kind of discrimination is in existence. Some of the women polled had never run into unfair treatment in their jobs or as housewives, and simply didn't know of its occurence. Shirley Erhart, library aide, 909 South 7th - Yes. They don't get equal pay for equal work. Mrs. Arlene Grewell, housewife, 104 East D Street - No, I don't. Maybe in very high executive positions, but not normally. Janet Hurst, sales ¢~erk, 2020 Adams - I've heard women are, but I really don't know. Jim Eaton, corrections ofrg:et, Route 3, Sheiton - Yes, because people can't get used to women having the same privileges as men. But they're headed that way. John Price, supervisor, Tacoma - Yes, in certain ool @ • Cl zens The Shelton SchoolDistrict Board is forming a Citizens' Advisory Committee, according to Dr. George Radich, school board president. The purpose of committee is to study the Accd for a special maintenance and operation levy based on the ri plans comml goal of maintaining the present or an improved educational program for Shelton School District children. The main areas of concern will be curriculum and finance, although other areas may be studied by the committee. The S__h_e!.ton High School program instances in pay and positions in employment. In supervising positions they'd choose a man first. I don't know how they're going to change it. Donna Hoiloway, housewife, Box 804, Shelton - Sometimes. It depends on the job and the employer. Dianne Arnold, housewife, P. O. Box 911 - I think so. I don't think it's as bad as it used to be. But there are still many positions where they are. Kenneth Ellingson, store manager, Route 3, P. O. Box 260 - There is a lot of equal employment at Simpson. Around town here I don't believe they are discriminated against, but probably in some other places financial problems of carrying on the present curriculum along with adding new subjects or courses and how to pay for them will be discussed. The school board hopes that a good cross section of the community will volunteer to be involved in studying the local needs of their schools, said Dr. Radich. Those interested in serving on the Citizens' Advisory Committee to the school board should c~l the school superintendent's office at 426-1687 or 426.1688 anytime between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. they are. Mrs. Jim Needham, retired registered nurse, Shelton - I think they have been exploited in the past. But I think the women are going a little too far now. B. T. Winiecki, retired chemical engineer, Sylvan Heights - 1 think that's obvious. You don't have to go looking very far to find it. The Supreme Court has already ruled on that. Rick Blake, truck driver, Route 1, Box 294 - Not really. Not in most jobs. It depends if they're qualified or not. Some women are more qualified than the men. I imagine there are some jobs where they are discriminated against. Mabel Kidd, housewife, Route 10, Shelton - From what I've heard they seem to be. I don't work myself, so I don't know from experience. Mrs. Lincoln S. Walton, housewife, 432 Ellinor - Not right now. I think it's improved a great deal. Bob Benitz, corrections officer, 126 Willow Place - In certain professions. But I think they're trying to be in some professions that they shouldn't be in. Vince Glaser, tree farmer driver, 2002 Spring Road. - I've only worked in one place with women. They weren't paid as much and couldn't eat with the men. They've been discriminated against. Becky Beierle, housewife, Route 1, Box 197 -Yes, sometimes. It depends... If they By JEAN PROUTY and SUE WYATr A new program has been started by the language department at SHS.
