By JOHN HURST
After losing to Olympia in
overtime Tuesday night, Shelton
came back Friday to slip past
North Thurston 73-68.
On the first-round tip Mike
Bariekman received a pass for an
easy layup. The Rams were in for
a night of catch-up ball as they
trailed the whole game, catching
up once at 62-all with 4:04
remaining in the contest.
Nevertheless, Thurston
remained fairly close throughout
the game as it played a
man-to-man defense against
Shelton's zone, relying on guards
Rick Hillier and Rick Landshut
who pumped in 12 points each.
In the closing seconds of the
quarter Mark Tuson hit a baseline
jumper to top Shelton out at
18-14.
In the second quarter Todd
Brewer took the tip for a layup,
repeating Bariekman's
game-opening stunt. Shelton
forced several Ram turnovers as it
stuck with the press from midway
in the first quarter.
With I :58 left in the half the
Climbers were up by 10 and at
the horn by nine - 42-33.
The Rams hit two unanswered
baskets to open the third period
and with 4:57 remaining, Shelton
coach Terry Gregg called a
timeout. As 1:37 expired,
Thurston came within one at
48-47, but fell behind 60-52 at
the break.
The fourth quarter proved to

be the hot one. The •Rams were
given two opportunities in a row
to tie the score at 62-62. The first
one was thrown away to Tuson
who got in the way of a pass
meant for Don Engle under the
boards.
On the second attempt
Landshut pumped an 18-foot
airball out of bounds.
During the course of these
threats the Climbers couldn't
score and with 3:60 remaining
Ram Randy Helland sank a short
jumper. Shelton, responding, hit
two jump shots and two lay-ups
and with 1:24 left was up by six -
70-64.
Mike Baze proceeded to the
foul line with 15 seconds
remaining in the game. He coolly
made both shots and the Climbers
had it made. Thurston then made
one more hoop.
On the Climber's inbounds
play, Randy Bostrom was fouled
with one second left. He missed
the first, hit the second and the
Climbers had one more win.
Shelton had a balanced
scoring attack, its most even one
this year. Randy Bostrom and
Mike Baze shared high point
honors with 15 apiece, Todd
Brewer had 14, Mark Tuson 13,
and Mike Bariekman 12. Bob
Christensen and Dan Fitchett
added two each.

PANTORIUM CLEANS MORGAN-EACRETT
Showing the class which made it one of the pre-season
favorites, Pantorium climbed into the saddle as city league
basketball entries turned into the stretch for the season's
second half.
The Cleaners splintered Morgan-Eacrett Lumber's
unbeaten house with a crushing 53 to 36 victory last
Thursday night.
Black-haired Jess Phillips was the thorn which bled the
Morgan-Eacrett victory string to death. Jess' 15 points
killed every comeback started by the lumbermen and offset
the 21 tallies Bob Tobey canned for the losers.
