Climbers take down Falcons By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.cora Rudy Mackiewicz didn't expect his match to go beyond the first round. The Shelton senior wrestled at 170 pounds Jan. 23 during the Highclimbers' senior night home match in the Mini Dome, winning by pin after 5 minutes, 25.5 seconds. "I was expecting my match to go a lot faster," said Mackiewicz, a first-year wrestler. "But (Foss's An- thony Nguyen) put UP a good fight and took it to the third round." Shelton defeated Foss 42-25. Mackiewicz earned the only of- fensive points in the first period with a takedown and a two-point nearfall. He was penalized twice for locking hands, awarding Nguyen one point each time. Nguyen narrowed Mackiewicz's lead in the second period, earning two escapes while Mackiewicz add- ing another takedown. Mackiewicz had a 6-4 lead head- ing into the third period. After earning two escapes, two takedowns and a three-point near- fall, Mackiewicz ended the match with 34.5 seconds remaining when he pinned Nguyen. "I got lucky and used a good tech- nique," he said. Head coach Chris Lacy said he was happy to see the Shelton se- niors wrestle so well at their final home match. Three other seniors competed in the match. Wrestling for the girls at 124 pounds, senior Kaitlin Woods earned an 11-1 major decision vic- tory. Although senior Jesus Jimenez (182) lost by pin at 3:15, Lacy said he showed a lot of improvement. Shelton's final senior wrestler was Byambasuren Delgersaikhan at 145. "I wish we'd had more matches," Lacy said. "As a team, this is the most beat up I've ever seen. A lot of people are out with pretty serious stuff." Shelton forfeited the 106 and 195 weight classes, while less expe- rienced wrestlers competed at 132, 220 and 285. Lacy said the best matches of the night came from sophomore Riley Rifle at 113, Woods and Mackie- wicz. Rifle pinned Wascar Carpio at 5:14. Lacy admired how Mackiewicz approaches the sport. "He's having fun, (is) competitive and a lot of fun to coach," Lacy said. Many of Shelton's points came from Foss forfeits. Sophomore Ca- leb Ragsdale (120), senior Gill Ra- mos (126) and sophomore Matt Mal- loy (220) each received forfeits. The Highclimbers also earned six points from sophomore Ty Lar- riva pinning Mike Davis at 132 pounds in 5:02. Shelton's final regular season match against Stadium -- sched- uled for Jan. 30 -- was canceled be- cause Stadium didn't have enough wrestlers. Because the postseason doesn't begin until the weekend of Feb. 7, Lacy said this gives Shelton two weeks of training and recuperation time.
