Wrestlers launch postseason
Mat sub,regionals
here this weekend
Wrestling's Shelton Highclimb-
era will make modern-day history
of sorts this weekend when they
host the postseason's first step up
the ladder to state, the Western
Cascade Conference sub-regional
tournament.
Their first such hosting role in
at least the last couple decades, it
finds them yielding their Minidome
mats to the area's 3A masses both
Friday evening and all day Satur-
day.
"Action starts Friday night at
5," says Climber head coach Chris
Lacy, "and then Saturday morning
at 10, with the finals being at ap-
proximately 5 p.m. on Saturday."
Shelton's hosts will go a dozen
strong into the annual qualifier for
regionals. Representing them will
be senior Bennett Barrow at 112,
junior Juan Lopez at 135, senior
Ty Barnhart at 140, junior Logan
Roadman at 152, junior Nathan
Zoren at 160, junior Ronald Yates
at 171, sophomores Jordan Frost
and Wally McMorris at 189, ju-
nior Isaac Garfias and sophomore
Isidro "Chile" Antonio at 215 and
juniors Jacob Nikolaisen and Brett
Corbett at 285.
Last Thursday the Climbers
closed their regular season with a
barnburner, winding up literally
inches away from teamwise vic-
tory in literally the very last sec-
ond of the match and finishing on
the short end of a 37-35 decision
in their battle with Lakes' visiting
Lancers.
"Bennett lost 6-7," says Lacy,
referring to senior l l2-pounder
Bennett Barrow, who's match was
the evening's finale. "And he took
the wrestler down as time expired,
but his right foot was out of bounds
by about two inches. Otherwise we
woulda won the dual.
"But Bennett's match was just
great, and he gave a great effort.
It was very exciting."

NM baseball wants YOU
Calling all
Pioneer kids
Listen up, Grapeview and Agate-
area kids.
In an attempt to "foster a com-
munity spirit between the north
and south parts of the county,"
reports spokeswoman Dee Chart-
ier, North Mason Little League is
recruiting in the Pioneer School
area.
Eligible are all kids 5-18 years
old, and registration will be held
from noon to 4 p.m. both February
3 and February 10 in the upper
meeting room at the Belfair QFC.
Fees are $60 for T,ball (ages 5-7),
$70 for coach-pitch Minors and
Majors (ages 7-12) and $80 for Ju-
niors/Seniors/Big Leaguers (ages
13-18). There is a $5 discount per
additional child per family, "and
ask about assistance," reminds
Chartier.
For more information, visit the
NMLL Web site at gonmll.com or
call 427-8836.
Five-nine junior post Marissa
Hill cool-handed a pair of free
throws with a second left Friday
night as the girls came from be-
hind to beat league rival Clover
Park 64-63 on the road.
The hosts tried to ice the Climb-
ers' veteran by calling time out
after she'd tied the game with her
first freebie, but Marissa calm-
ly swished the decider and the
Climbers had their third league
victory in hand.
Junior guards Brynna Fuller
and Paige Barrett combined for 44
points in the victory.
Meanwhile, their counterparts
ran away from Clover Park in the
boys' go-around here by a 71-57
count behind six-four senior scor-
ing machine Curtis Trondsen's 29
points and a combined 27 more
from classmate Corey Golob and
junior Alex Olson.
Alas, Tuesday night saw the
two Climber contingents bow to
their respective counterparts from
Capital High School. The boys
went to overtime before losing 51-
54 and the girls lost 31-59 to the
once-beaten Cougs.
The boys went to 11-5 overall
and 5-2 in league, the girls to 6-8
and 3-5.
Incidentally, in Friday night,s
jayvee contest here the Climber
boys went to fully three overtimes
before losing. Amazingly, it was
the second straight three-overtime
game the host Climbers had been
involved in in the span of a week
- the varsity contingent having
prevailed in three just days before
in what coaches guessed was a 20-
year first here.
