Not ALL B'S' (Continued from page 22.) make sure we eat lots." "Yeah," puts in Jimmy. "I mean, it's the same with any sport: The better you eat, the better you perform and stuff." Oh, so they're not a couple o' common junkfood junkies, then? "No," they chorus. "Not too bad," amends Ty- son. Jimmy shrugs. "I don't eat, like, McDonald's and Jack- In-The.Box and stuff like that," he says. "I work at A&W," rejoins Tyson. "But, you know, even there I watch what I eat. I hardly ever eat burg- ere or anything." But could it affect him adversely if he did? Tyson hesitates. "Ummm, yeah," he says, and up pops a confessional grin. "It definitely does. Cuz when you eat right before practice you just feel like throwin' up. And if you eat a lot the day before that's just junk food it doesn't work out well." Jimmy stops laughing long enough to remark as how it's quite common for all-out physi- cal effort to have that effect prisingly well prepared for what would seem to await them in the not-too-distant future: The end of their teamwise competitive careers. "I originally planned to con- tinue swimming in college," says Tyson, who expects to study medicine at BYU in either Pro- vo or Idaho. "But I know I'm not good enough to compete at that level. And, you know, college is where I need t' really focus on my studies a lot more." And his buddy? "I'd love to swim," says Jim- my, who's been accepted at UPS in Tacoma. So..." he was a SO, WHAT'LL HE --v..---(),' take with him from the sport when all is said and done? Besides his friendship with Tyson, that is. "Swimming has showed me what hard work is - and what I like and what I wanna do with it," he says. Tyson nods solemnly. "I - with or without junk food. found that in junior high I was "Oh, yeah: working yourself just kinda one of those people to the point of throwing up," that followed people," he says. he says- to which his friend responds with another baleful grin, "I quit eating breakfast on Saturday morning," says Tyson, "just because I know in practice I would lose it..." Speaking of losing, how does its prospect affect the two when they're rivals? More to the point, does their friendship ever suffer for it?,, "It generally, works out, says "I tried t' hang out with people, cuz I'd moved from Southside so I didn't know anybody. And so I was just kind of 'the follower.' "I hung out with the 'cool' people, but I wasn't the 'cool' person. "For me," he says, "I'm always just like, 'Oh, MA)V.r I can't let him catch meI!!' You know: 'I gotta stay ahead.' And Jimmy's always right on my tail - or the other way around." He grins. "You know, on coaching more than just the technical aspects of swimming, they point out. ,They teach us a lot about life and how t' deal with it," says Jimmy. I find where my limits are: I can see myself. "And then I feel this pain and I say, 'Hey, am I just gonna back off here and just be normal, or am I gonna rise above it?'
