"Yeah," puts in Jimmy. "I
mean, it's the same with any
sport: The better you eat, the
better you perform and stuff."
Oh, so they're not a couple
o' common junkfood junkies,
then?
"No," they chorus.
"Not too bad," amends Ty-
son.
Jimmy shrugs. "I don't eat,
like, McDonald's and Jack-
In-The.Box and stuff like that,"
he says.
"I work at A&W," rejoins
Tyson. "But, you
know, even there I
watch what I eat. I
hardly ever eat burg-
ere or anything."
But could it affect
him adversely if he
did?
Tyson hesitates.
"Ummm, yeah," he
says, and up pops a
confessional grin. "It
definitely does. Cuz
when you eat right
before practice you
just feel like throwin' up. And
if you eat a lot the day before
that's just junk food it doesn't
work out well."
Jimmy stops laughing long
enough to remark as how it's
quite common for all-out physi-
cal effort to have that effect
prisingly well prepared for what
would seem to await them in the
not-too-distant future:
The end of their teamwise
competitive careers.
"I originally planned to con-
tinue swimming in college," says
Tyson, who expects to study
medicine at BYU in either Pro-
vo or Idaho. "But I know I'm not
good enough to compete at that
level. And, you know, college is
where I need t' really focus on
my studies a lot more."
And his buddy?
"I'd love to swim," says Jim-
my, who's been accepted at UPS
in Tacoma. "But I don't plan
on it, cuz I'll have to

what hard work is - and what
I like and what I wanna do with
it," he says.

cuz I'd moved from Southside so
I didn't know anybody. And so I
was just kind of 'the follower.'
"I hung out with the 'cool'
people, but I wasn't the 'cool'
person. And then I joined swim-
ruing, and just from the exam-
ple that other people set for me
and the competition and stuff it
really raised my expectations to
push myself. And I just kinda
became-"
He cuts himself off with a nod
in his friend's direction. "Jimmy

really not much of
a difference m our
times; they're so close,
for the most part."
So there's never

Jimmy grins. "Well,

about it."
Tyson nods. "For me," he says,
"I'm always just like, 'Oh, MA)V.r
I can't let him catch meI!!' You
know: 'I gotta stay ahead.' And
Jimmy's always right on my tail
- or the other way around."

credit to their coaches as well,

"Oh! Pain doesn't bother me
at all," says Jimmy, matter-of-
factly. "Not at all. I can shut it
out of my head. It's there, but
I kind of forget about it, and it
kinda pushes me and stuff like
that."

Hoop Owls stay the cou
Owl hoopdom's boys and girls
out in Matlock weathered match-
ing three-game challenges with
mixed reviews the past week.
A week ago Tuesday, at Ta-
holah, Mary M. Knight's Owls lost
both genders' battles, the boys' by
six points and the girls' by 16.
Friday against visiting Lake
Quinault the boys rebounded to
win 59-41 and the girls did the
same to prevail 41-38.
And Saturday the Owl boys
dropped to 10-6 overall and 8-
5 in league with a 42-53 loss to
Oakville on the road and the girls
beat their Acorn hosts 47-32 to im-
prove to 11-6 and 7-6.
