celebrate 40 years,
support programs
The North Mason Timberland
Regional Library is selling art cal-
endars in celebration of its 40th
anniversary.
The calendars feature pen-and-
ink drawings of local landmarks
and a brief history of the local
Friends of the Library group. The
$10 price tag supports library ac-
tivities, including various reading
programs. For more information
about the calendars or the pro-
gram, drop by the library, located

control stormwater
The Lower Hood Canal Water-
shed Coalition is planning a free
public presentation on the use of
native plants to control stormwa-
ter runoff. The talk will be given
by Teri King of the Washington
Sea Grant program at 6 p.m. on
Monday, February 5, at the North
Mason School District administra-
tive offices, located on East Cam-
pus Drive below the high school.
The coalition is a group which
works to improve and protect the
quality and quantity of fresh and
marine waters in the watershed.

Valentine's Dinner
will raise money for
NMHS Grad Night
The Grad Night Party commit-
tee of North Mason High School is
planning a fund-raiser Valentine's
Dinner, scheduled" for 5 p.m. on
Wednesday, February 14, at the
Horton Community Center/Grape-
view Fire Hall in Grapeview. The
cost of tickets is $15 per person.
"Grad Night" is a parent-orga-
nized, drug-free and alcohol-free
party at a surprise location held
immediately after graduation. For

Gala evening set to
benefit Shining Star
scholarship fund
The first annual Marissa
Goodell Shining Star Scholarship
Evening is set to begin at 6 p.m.
on February 18 at the Alderbrook
Resort and Spa. The event will
include a no-host bar, music, a
gourmet dinner and will also un-
veil the winner of the first Shining
Star Humanitarian Award. ,
Reservations are required by
February 5 and the cost of the eve-
ning is $75 per person. Proceeds
will benefit scholarships t'o North
Mason High School students. For

Norman Sanders
Norman Everett Sanders, a
longtime superintendent of the
North Mason School District, died
in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December
19:He was 78.
He was born on July 13, 1928
in Palouse to
George M. and
Edna N. (Mc-
Gahan) Sand-
ers.
Mr. Sanders
served in the
United States
Navy from
1946 to 1948.
He married
the Nancy B.
Schwartz on
June 15, 1951
in Anatone.
Norman
In 1952, Mr.
Sanders
Sanders was
awarded his bachelor's degree
from Eastern Washington College
and he later earned a master's de-

Mr. Sanders enjoyed hiking,
water-skiing, snorkeling, snow-
skiing, golfing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Nan-
cy of Wailea, Maul; by his brother
George L. Sanders and his wife Ei-
leen of Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii;
by his daughter Theresa S. Landis
and her husband James of Belfair;
by his son Thomas N. Sanders and
his wife Theresa of Olympia; by
his three granddaughters, Brandi
L. Edinger of Allyn, CheIsi D. Ed-
inger of Olympia, and Courtney
Duncan of Olympia; by his grand-
son Jason T. Sanders of Yelm; and
by his great-grandson Blake F.

Center quilt project
Last summer the Mary E. The-
ler Community Center began a
quilt project, planning two theme
quilts to be made by members of
the public. One quilt was to be for
permanent display and one was to
be auctioned off as a fund-raiser.
The first quilt, a truly outstand-
ing piece of workmanship, is now
on display at the center and plans
for the second one are now under
way. Prior experience is not nec-
essary. To make a square, go to
the center and, for a $10 fee, pick
up the instructions and three re-
quired fabrics. Completion is re-
quired by January 31. The center
is located at 22871 NE State Route
