BEAR CENTER John Terry (42) prepares to launch a shot late in Tuesday's
Black Hills League match-up in the Minidome as Climbers Brian Martin (44)
and Stan Bourgault (right) converge. Behind Martin is Shelton guard Les
Smith. The Climbers' 57-56 victory preserved their league leadership.
Climbers humble 'Cats
despite lousy shooting
Cold hands proved of little
consequence last Friday as the
league-leading Shelton
Highclimbers easily outclassed
Black Hills foe Chehalis 60-38 on
the Bearcats' home court.
Shelton shot a miserable
11-32 in the first half but still
managed to adjourn to the
locker room with a 25-15
advantage - attributable largely
to the Climbers' all-court press
and the inexperience of an
opponent that had won just one
of eight league games prior to
the match-up.
Shelton managed to get going
in the third quarter as senior
Stan Bourgault and juniors Les
Smith and Jim O'Dell began
finding the range. Twenty points
later, at the start of the fourth
period, Shelton had a 45-22 lead
- and Coach Terry Gregg began
looking to the bench.
Bourgault, Smith and O'Dell
each tallied 11 points to lead the
way, while Gary Orr added
seven, Brian Martin six, Terry
Brown five, Dave Danielson four,
Bruce Dorcy three and Jay Swift
two. Mike Ashley, Grant Fox
and Pat Rhodes played
nonscoring roles.
The Climbers finished with a
.391 shooting figure on 25-64,
while the Bearcats managed just
.286 on 14-49. Brant Kane and
Steve Azeltine led Chehalis'
scoring with eight and seven
points, respectively.
The Climbers played without
the services of junior starting
forward Todd Young, who'd
jammed a thumb during practice
earlier in the week Young was
ready for action in time for the
following game, however.
JVs stage dramatic finish
The Climber jayvees won a
one-point thriller in the
Minidome Tuesday, holding off
the Oly Bears repeatedly in the
waning seconds for a 60-59
victory.
After Scan Byrne's jumper
with less than a minute left had
elevated the Climbers to a
one.point lead, the Bears got
several shots off - and once at
the freethrow line - but

board work by Pat Rhodes
particularly kept the Bears from
getting a good shot inside as
time ran out.
Rhodes, a 6-3 junior, finished
with a game-high 21 points. Mike
Ashley added eight in just a little
over a quarter's playing time,
while Grant Fox hit eight, Jay
Swift and Terry Brown six each,
Dave Danielson five, Byrne four
and Gary Orr two.

Chehalis. The victories tightened
the Climbers' hold on first place
in their division.
