Hoodsport: NOW OPEN... WE'RE NEWI Long-time local resident honored on 88th birthday MILL CREEK ENTE By VIRGINIA REIS A surprise party was given to honor a local citizen and world-traveler. S purgeon Johnston was 88 years old on January 24. The preceding Sunday, January 22, he was asked to drop in for supper with a niece and nephew, Charlotte and Rick Sharpes on Old Mill Hill Road. Many friends and relatives had already "dropped in." Spurgeon Johnston Everyone helped, but tile chief organizers were the hostess, Charlotte Sharpes, and another niece, Lorna Pile. During the festivities Gib Johnston read a poem for the honored guest. His wile, Sharon, had baked a cake in the shape of an 88. Spurgeon Johnston was born in Missouri. His family has lived in this area since the early 1920's. Having been a pharmacist all of his professional life, he built and operated a drugstore in Hoodsport from 1966 to '68, where the Hood Canal State Bank now stands. Johnston's home, across from the Ranger Station on Cushman Road, is a familiar and lovely landmark in the area. But Johnston's home is the world. He has traversed every continent and many oceans. Four equator crossings and two dateline crossings in tile last five years have taken him to the Orient, Russia and an African safari. On the later trip in 1975 he went 2,000 feet down to the very bottom of a volcanic crater. Last year Johnston spent three weeks in Alaska. The entire community wishes Spurgeon Johnston many more happy, active years. Happy birthday to a fine man! COMMUNITY NEWS The Hoodsport Auxiliary announces the presentation of the "Neighborhood Watch" program February 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the firehall. The Mason County sheriff's department will show how we can all help to minimize burglary, theft and vandalism in our area. The Hood Canal School Board will meet February 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. The evening's agenda will include reports on the reading program and the new math program, a discussion on tile proposed bus enclosure, and a discussion on whether a special levy will be required this spring. School district residents are welcome to come, listen, ask questions and participate in any discussions of interest to them. The superintendent and members of the board want the thinking of their constituents. The Lilliwaup Community Club will meet February 3. Potluck dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., followed by the monthly business meeting. The program will be "The History of the Lilliwaup Area." Francie Robinson will read a paper she wrote on the subject as a student at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Then there will be a panel of Lilliwaup senior citizens to round out our information on how this area developed and became what is today "our home." The Lilliwaup pinochle group was reactivated January 20, and will continue to meet the third Friday evening each month. Potluck dessert and coffee after the game enable participants to enjoy the social interchange with no need for volunteer hostesses and advance preparation. The mini-bus needs some more passengers. It starts pick-ups Friday mornings at 9:30 Just off Highway 3 on Mill Creek Road, a.m. in the Lilliwaup area, and takes everyone to Shelton. Residents of Hoodsport, Cushman and Potlatch are all welcome. The return trip leaves Shelton around 2 p.m. This is the bargain of the century. It's door-to-door pick-up and delivery. There is no charge; however, a donation of $1.25 to the Senior Center is customary for each round trip. To arrange pick-up, phone Marian Johnstone in LilliwauP. l-let number is 877-5519. The Reverend Wesley Gain of Hood Canal Community Church and his wife, Faith, were treated to a beautiful 35th wedding anniversary celebration. Their daughter, Sharon, a Chicago-based United Airlines stewardess, took them to Hawaii for eight days of uninterrupted sunshine. The community offers sunny and sincere congratulations. SCOUT NEWS January 28 was the day of the big event for Pack 11 Cub Scouts and their families. The annual Pinewood Derby Race was held that afternoon in the multipurpose room of Hood Canal School. Earier in the month each boy received a block of pine wood, four wheels, and four nails to be used as axles. The boys designed cars of their choice, sanded and painted them. Upon completion, each car qualified within the required specifications for overall width, length and weight. The cars were then judged for appearance. Danny McGrady received the special car award. The 16 contestants entered their cars in a double elimination race. The winners were Scott Dennison (for two consecutive years), first place; Matt Winni, second place; Trent Gags, third; and John Oblizalo, fourth place. All four boys and cars are eligible to race against the winners from the other packs in the Mason District Runoff March 11.
