Hoodsport: NOW OPEN... WE'RE NEWI
Long-time local resident honored on 88th birthday MILL CREEK ENTE
By VIRGINIA REIS
A surprise party was given to
honor a local citizen and
world-traveler. S purgeon
Johnston was 88 years old on
January 24. The preceding
Sunday, January 22, he was
asked to drop in for supper with
a niece and nephew, Charlotte
and Rick Sharpes on Old Mill
Hill Road. Many friends and
relatives had already "dropped
in."
Spurgeon Johnston
Everyone helped, but tile
chief organizers were the hostess,
Charlotte Sharpes, and another
niece, Lorna Pile. During the
festivities Gib Johnston read a
poem for the honored guest. His
wile, Sharon, had baked a cake
in the shape of an 88.
Spurgeon Johnston was born
in Missouri. His family has lived
in this area since the early
1920's. Having been a pharmacist
all of his professional life, he
built and operated a drugstore in
Hoodsport from 1966 to '68,
where the Hood Canal State
Bank now stands.
Johnston's home, across from
the Ranger Station on Cushman
Road, is a familiar and lovely
landmark in the area. But
Johnston's home is the world.
He has traversed every continent
and many oceans. Four equator
crossings and two dateline
crossings in tile last five years
have taken him to the Orient,
Russia and an African safari. On
the later trip in 1975 he went
2,000 feet down to the very
bottom of a volcanic crater. Last
year Johnston spent three weeks
in Alaska.
The entire community wishes
Spurgeon Johnston many more
happy, active years. Happy
birthday to a fine man!

6:30 p.m., followed by the
monthly business meeting. The

January 28 was the day of
the big event for Pack 11 Cub

annual Pinewood Derby Race
was held that afternoon in the
multipurpose room of Hood

width, length and weight. The
cars were then judged for
appearance. Danny McGrady
received the special car award.
The 16 contestants entered
their cars in a double elimination
race. The winners were Scott
Dennison (for two consecutive
years), first place; Matt Winni,
second place; Trent Gags, third;
