.,' , , , , , , , ,, , , , m,' i, ,, (Near Future) AI'I Four people and a white Cadillac ,were fatally wounded yesterday in an attempted defection by a small band of dissidents from the newly established Citizen's Republic of Reach Island. Following on the heels of last week's surprise attack on a nearby marina, the incident is being regarded by authorities as another indication of the new regime's basic hostility. In a broadcast speech, Citizen's Leader Bogus Hilton, Jr., called the deaths "regrettable, but necessary" because their escapes would have been "detrimental to the security of tile new order." Killed in the failedbreakout were four deposed officers of the Country Club Association that once ruled the tiny island before, its recent revolution. Mcanwh'ile residents of a neighboring island community have become increasingly alarmed over the Bogus regime's repeated promises to aid "leftist" attempts to infiltrate and rally for nationalization of all second homes on the island. Last year similar actions were instigated by the Bogus government following its undetected infiltration of the island's security patrol. Following a strategic march across the island bridge, even against its red light, Bogus' compatriots immediately severed the island's contact with the outside world by detonating charges on the bridge, reducing it to rubble and destroying the attached telephone cable. Next, the island's perilneter was mined. During the takeover many of the former island residents were allowed to flee, providing they signed over their homes and sailboats to the newly established Citizen's Republic. Owners of second homes on the island who were away at the time were never allowed back on the island, while those trapped have reportedly been assigned to work crews engaged in ripping out rhododendrons and restoring the island's natural vegetation. Since the takeover little information has been gained concerning activities on the island. However, it has been learned that another .four people were killed when attempting to escape during the night in a fiberglass yacht. In sporadic communiques, Bogus has placed the legitimacy for his regime on a long-forgotten treaty signed between explorer Vancouver and the lost Reach tribe who, according to Bogus, once inhabited the island. According to this controversial agreement, the island was to be kept :is a natural preserve for the tribe's sacred blue hcrons or revert back to tribal ownership if used for any other purpose. Bogus claims to be a direct descendant of tribal princess Little Morn who married with the neighboring Wraths on the mainhmd, later known as the Wraths of Grapeview. Incidentally, Bogus senior persistently denied any Indian ancestry during his short life. Bogus' claim to power is also bolstered by his Minister of Internal Security, Wrath's Reach, who also claims direct lineage to the area's original inhabitants. Following yesterday's outbreak of violence, the federal government has declined comment or action. Sources in high places say that the treaty claimed by Bogus and Wrath is actually authentic. Other insiders claim that action against the new regime would upset current trade negotiations with the Peoples Republic of China, which the Bogus government claims as an ally. Commissioners act on Tahuya permits At their January 23 meeting the county conunissioners took action on two requests from tile Tahuya area for exemptions from tile requirement of gaining a shoreline permit for proposed construction on Hood Canal. Eugene Coons, along with Donald and Gloria Walker, were denied an exemption for their proposed construction of a bulkhead and pier with attached float and ramp. The action followed the recommendation of the county planning office. Jack King was awarded an exemption for his proposed 88-foot marine railway for private boat launching. Commissioner Tom Taylor irade the motion, which was carried unanimously by the board.
