bonn Sidney Nelson
bonn Sidney Nelson, 89,
died Thursday, Jan. 26,
at Maple
Glen in
Shelton of
complica-
tions of
bladder
cancer.
He was a
lifelong
Shelton
bonn resident.
Nelson He
was born
to Elroy
and Mabel Carlson Nelson
on April 14, 1922, in his
grandparents' house in
Spearfish, S.D. The family
moved to Shelton when he
was 2 and lived in a tent
while building a home on
Capitol Hill.
He attended Shel-
ton High School, where
he lettered in football,
wrestling and track, but
with his country at war
he enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in September 1942
before his senior year.
He served as an armed
guard on a naval vessel
accompanying merchant-
ship convoys in the North
Atlantic.
His family shared that
he told of his convoys be-
ing attacked by German
submarines and the im-
portance of the ships con-
tinuing full speed ahead
no matter what. That
meant straggling ships de-
veloping engine problems
or other troubles were left
behind and even when his
boat once passed through
men in the water scream-
ing for help after their
ship had been torpedoed,
it didn't stop. On one trip
his ship transported a load
of German prisoners and
he later recounted that by
talking to some of them,
he found out the young
enemy men were just like
him.
When the war in Europe
ended, he was sent to the
Pacific Theater for retrain-
ing with the Seabees and
served as a lifeguard in
water survival training in
Hawaii.
He worked with Simp-
son's bull gang, a part
of the maintenance op-
erations of Mill Two and
transferred to the boom,
working among the logs
on Oakland Bay until he
retired in 1979.
He married Barbara
Smith in Shelton in 1947;
they were divorced 29
years later. He married
Betty Renecker in Shelton
on Dec. 27, 1976.
He enjoyed golfing and
belonged to Bayshore Golf
Club. He owned and op-
erated Twanoh Marine,
a boat and paddleboard
rental concession at
Twanoh Park on the South
Shore of Hood Canal, from
1951 to 1957.
His family said that
his home at Island Lake
was a favorite swimming,
boating and picnicking
haven for family friends.
He enjoyed backpacking,
fishing, mushroom gath-
ering, sailing, and scuba
diving and became a scu-
ba instructor and mem-
ber of the Mason County
Sheriff Department's dive
team in search-and-rescue
efforts.
He is survived by his
children Janet Nelson
Daugherty of Seattle,
Gary Nelson (Allison) of
Shelton, Dennis Renecker
(JoAnn) of Mossyrock,
Marilyn Renecker Kulavik
(Joe) of Vancouver and
Steven Renecker (Diana)
of Shelton, 13 grandchil-
dren and numerous great-
grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his wife Betty
and older brother Laurel
Nelson.
At his request, no
services will be held. Ar-
rangements are by Mc-
Comb Funeral Home in
Shelton. Memorial dona-
tions may be made to the

Society.
