The Shelton girls' bowling team is
headed to the 4A State Tournament. Danielle
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Lady High- Ewart
climbers' secured their berth to state at
the West Central District III Tournament
at Pacific Lanes in Tacoma with a third
place finish.
"The girls did pretty well," head coach
Curt Snyder said. "Danielle [Ewart] was
our leader and placed ninth overall. The
rest of the girls bowled as
a team; no one really was
outstanding but no one
bowled poorly, either."
Sheltontook third out
of 10 4A teams in the
tournament with a total
score of 3,075 behind Cur-
tis High School in second
with 3,305 and Emerald
Ridge in first with 3,428.
Ewart finished in
ninth place overall with
scores of 178, 209 and
170 for a total of 557 and an average of
185. She received a ribbon for her ninth
place finish.
"We had one game that was bad in the
entire tournament," Snyder said.
"Really you're bowling
against all of the teams
and there's a big over-
head keeping track of ev-
eryone's scores," Snyder
said. "It's a lot of fun and
it's very loud."
Throughout the "sea-
son, Ewart led the team
in overall averages with
Mishawn 176 during 28 games,
Ewart while her sister Mishawn
Ewart scored an average
of 172 during 28 games.
Caitlyn Borys owned the third highest
average this season with 158 during 30
games while Brittany Smith scored an av-
erage of 147 during 30 games and Lindsey
Cox's average during 30 games was 143.
With their third-place finish at dis-
tricts, the Lady Highclimbers will next
compete at the WIAA 4A State Tourna-
ment at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb, 3, and at
7:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Narrows
Plaza in Tacoma.
"I know of some of the competition
[we'll see at state]," Snyder said. "Emer-
ald Ridge is an outstanding team, maybe
the best in the state. We'll have to get by
Emerald Ridge to win state, which [ don't
think we can do. I'd like to see it happen,
but I don't think we can."
Snyder said the fact the Lady High-
climbers made it to state this season is
quite an accomplishment.
"I'm proud of them," he said.
This is the eighth team Snyder has
coached to the state bowling tournament.

Chelsey Crump likes to
challenge herself with new
activities and opportunities.
Crump, a senior co-cap-
tain for the Shelton High
cheerleading team, began
cheering
as a chal-
lenge.

Crump said. "As a
manager,
I noticed
how different cheerleading
is and how much of a chal-
lenge it is and I decided to
give it a shot."
She said being a cheer-
leader for the last two years
has been challenging but
that she likes to try new
things.
"Cheerleading is so chal-
lenging because you perform
for only 2 1/2 minutes but
in those 2 1/2 minutes you
stunt, tumble, cheer and
jump and do a lot of things
you wouldn't normally do,"
Crump said.
As co-captain of the
team, Crump said it is her
responsibility to make sure
the other girls are going
to practices, wearing their
uniforms on the day they'll
be performing and keeping
them in line.

Shelton freshman forward Sean German takes the opening tipoff of the
Highclimbers' home game against Stadium on Friday, Jan. 27.
The Shelton boys' basketball team is still strug-
gling to play a whole game in the Narrows League.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Highclimbers lost at
Gig Harbor 76-36.
'vVe're having a tough time
keeping ourselves going and we're
not shooting very well," head coach
• Mark Jensen said. "If you don't
shoot very well, the game just
mushrooms out."
Jensen said that while the

ficult for the Highclimbers to stop.
TOMORROW: Freshman forward Scan Gor.
Shelton vs. man led the Highclimbers with
Bellarmine, 10 points while sophomore guard
7 p.m. Colton Hubble put up eight points.
Next, on Friday, Jan. 27, the
Highclimbers lost at home to Stadium 60-36.
Shelton stayed closed with Stadium through the
first half, going into halftime down 25-19 but in the
third quarter, Stadium scored 22 points while Shelton
put up nine.
"Iffs been a trademark for us: we seem to have real
tough third quarters after playing well in the first
half," Jensen said.
Senior guard Curtis Wuestner led the Highclimb-
ers with 14 points, shooting 7-for-10.
"He played real well," Jensen said.
Finally, on Monday, Jan. 30, the Highclimbers lost
at Central Kitsap 72-40.
"Again, we played a pretty good first half. We were
down eight to 10 points with about one minute left in
the half when we missed three free throws and went
into halfLime down 14," Jensen said. "We were doing
a good job of taking care of the bail but then did things
that led to turnovers again."
German led the Highclimbers with 11 points while
Hubble scored nine.
As of press time, the Highclimbers had not yet
played at Mt. Tahoma on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The
team's next game is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at
home against Bellarmine.
Shelton's final two games are set for 7 p.m. on
Monday, Feb. 6, at home against South Kitsap and 7
p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at home against Olympia.
"It's going to be a tough finish," Jensen said. "The
two co-leaders of the league are Bellarmine and Olym-
pia and South Kitsap is fighting for the last playoff
spot."
He said the team is going to have to change how
they play and do a better job of taking care of the ball.
"I've felt like we've played hard and done well on
defense but turnovers have been a problem," Jensen
said.
Sh,elton ch0000erleaders bound for state

The Shelton cheerleading squad is headed to the 2012
WIAA State Cheerleading Championship this weekend.
At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, the Lady Highclimb-
ers will compete among 53 total teams for state cheer-
leading glory.
This is the fourth year the Lady Highclimbers have at-
tended the state championships and the third with Misty
Pagel as head coach.
"Every year we compete we get a little better," Pagel
said. "We're in a harder division this year, though."
For the last three years, the Lady Highclimbers com-
peted in the medium tumbling division and this year
they will compete in the 4A nontumbling division against
seven other schools: Auburn, Kentwood Black, South Kit-
sap, Bothell, Skyview, Evergreen and Bethel Silver.
Pagel said there are three ways for a team to qualify
for state. The first is to earn a score of 195 or higher at a
competition, the second is to be in the top 50 percent of
teams at a competition and the third is to be one of the
top 50 teams in the state.
At competitions, squads are judged based on their
cheering and dancing, jumping and stunting.
On Dec. 3, during the Shelton cheerleading competi-
tion in the Mini Dome, the Lady Highclimbers qualified
by earning enough points.
This was the second of four competitions the team
went to this season.
On Nov. 12, the Lady Highclimbers competed at Pen-
insula High School.
"They did pretty well," Pagel said. "It was very, very
early in the season so it was good to hear what the judges
had to say. We came home and fixed issues."
At the third competition in Bellarmine in January,
Pagel said half of the team had the flu.
Finally, at the fourth competition the Lady High-
climbers attended, Pagel said two of the girls were in-
jured.
The first year the Lady Highclimbers attended state,
they brought home eighth place while the team placed
sixth the second year.
The Lady Highclimbers had to switch to the nontum-
bling division this year because a tumbling team needs
at least half of the members to have tumbling skills. This
year, the team fell a few members shy of the required
number.
With five seniors, no juniors, 16 sophomores and seven
freshmen, this is a rebuilding year for the Lady High-
climbers, Pagel said.
"I think they've done amazing," she added. "There are
a lot of them who are kind of new to cheering, having
only done youth cheering or rec-league cheering, and
several who've never cheered before. Cofisidering that,
we've done very well."
