'TChen I got in the ring my first time I was scared, but now I'm used to it." True, she says, the first time you take a punch in the noggin does hurt a bit and shakes you up. "But if you get hit, like, a couple times you get used to it," don't hurt after that. "I'm used to it now, cuz I get hit pretty hard." HER STRONG suit at this early juncture in her ring career? "Umm, I dunno. Probably my punches," says Melissa. "Yeah, they're pretty hard." She proffers a halfway embar- rassed laugh and points in Coach 'I have to eat like Stewart's direction. "Broke his nose," she says, blurting a laugh. What?! Her big, tough, ex- fighter coach? Melissa pinks just a smidgen and shrugs. "I guess," she says, grinning anew. "I dunno - that's what he says." "Tough cookie," is she? "Well, I dunno. My whole life I've been a tomboy," says Melissa. "My uncles always pick on me..." Smile still in place despite sparring partner Shane's three- minute attempt to knock it off just moments before, Coach Stew- art joins the discussion. "I wouldn't say boxing-is a violent sport - at all," he tells you. "It's-" "There's a lot o' sportsman- ship," shoots in Shane. "Very much," says Coach. "It's very, very good in that respect." What it is, too, adds the 1990 SHS grad - himself a fight veter- an at about 165 pounds some half-dozen years ago - is exhaust- ing. "Real tiring," he says. "I mean, you fight for two minutes, three rounds. And you think it's only two minutes, but you're breathin' heavy and your arms get heavy and your body's tired..." He grins. 'Tou work out three hours a day and jog three to five miles a day," he says, "- and you can still be winded" this tortuous sport? "Well," says the club's resident heavyweight, "I've wanted to be a fighter since I've been about 15 .... "And I just enjoy keepin' in good shape." Heroes in the fight game? "I liked Tyson, of course - at the time," says Shane. "I'm not much of a fan of his now. And I think the best fighter is either Lennox Lewis or, in a different weight class, Oscar de la Hoya." What he admires most in a fighter, says the Shelton native, is something totally unrelated to strength or guile. "Heart," he says, without hesi- tation. AND WHAT'S the best feeling he's ever had in the ring? Shane brightens impishly and points in the direction of his coach. "See that black eye?" he says, barely resisting a grin. "That's it." Unbeaten Mason County Gar- bage toppled Olympic Motors/ Reller Logging 89-45, upping its scoring average to a league-lead- ing 81.8 points per game, while current "B" Division runner-up Olympic Herb Farm (5-2) bested the Potlatch Pirates 89-69, as- suming the number-two spot sta- tistically at 81.6 ppg. Sea West Mortgage/Colo's Cor- ner (4-2) topped Soundview Chi- ropractic/Lix Construction 94-68, upping its ppg to 72.7, good for third, while Skokomish (4-3) checked in a half game back and fourth in scoring at 71.4 ppg with an 82-71 win over Little Creek Casino. MC GARBAGE rolled over Olympic Motors/Relier, getting 36 points from Matt Bogh and 22 from brother Mike. Olympic Herb nursed a four- point lead aider one quarter be- fore pulling away from Potlatch.
