has worked for years in libraries
including one and a half years at
the Olympia library. She was
transferred to the Timberland
South Mason Library when it
opened.
The bookmobile left the
Shelton area and traveled north
on US 101. The ground on either
side of the road was covered with
a crusty layer of dirty snow. A
few days earlier that same snow
had adhered to the roads and
need. The school stops such as at
Hood Canal Elementary are
intended to allow children in the
country to check out
pleasure-reading books.
The bookmobile's next stop
was Waterwheel where it parked
next to a closed gift shop. Mrs.
Howe and Bernethy carried on
conversations with the patrons
like old friends who hadn't seen
each other in almost a month.
While the patrons glanced at the
titles on the shelves they traded

few healthy honks of the truck's
horn. Once again patrons ran to
the bookmobile as soon as it
stopped. A woman left with not
only two armloads of books, but
filled out a fistful of request slips
for books to be mailed to her
home. The variety of books she
requested reflected her diverse
curiosities. She wrote on one
request form, "anything by J.
Kishnamurti," "Men and Plants"
on another, and "The Whole
Earth Catalogue" on a third.

The bookmobile was parked
across the highway from the post
office and Dave's Mark-It Foods.
Immediately, people came
scurring out from the grocery
store and nearby houses with
their heads covered with hats or
wrapped in scarves.
"I've never been on a
bookmobile before," said one
elderly patron,,,-- have I been
missing anything?
"Well, come on in and see,"
said Mrs. Howe.
A woman returned an

on
the counter and then said,'"That s

The bookmobile was filled
with half a dozen or so patrons
