New education loans for vets The Veterans Administration is processing applications for new education loans for veterans attending school under the GI Bill. The loans, up to a maximum of $600 in one academic year, were established by the Vietnam-era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, enacted by Congress last month. The new law also provided a 22.7 percent increase in monthly payments for !.5 million veterans in training under the GI Bill. Single veterans now receive $270 monthly. A veteran with two dependents received $366. Overcharge ordered returned If you purchased a motor vehicle recently, you may be receiving an unexpected check from your dealer. In fact, several thousand purchasers have already been surprised. Jack Nelson, Motor Vehicles Director, explained that the department's dealer division has required a number of dealers throughout the state to review all sales for the past two years for possible overcharge of official fees. Nelson noted that field audits by the division disclosed that some dealers had collected larger fees than had been paid to the state. As a result, the dealers have been directed to refund the overcharge to their customers. Early tax filings lag The Internal Revenue Service is concerned about the apparent lag in taxpayers filing 1974 federal income tax returns early this year. IRS District Director Michael Sassi said that the number of persons filing early this year is down at least ten percent over the same period last year.
