UCK FARMING--the practice.of growing 0"no or a :few
tinds 'of produce on a large-scale b/asis--is a ursuit
'Which could werI contribute much to the economic
fuEure of Mason County. Modern truck farming is
an industry in itself, and a root from which other
industries grow. A community surrounded by thriving
truck farms lmost invariably develops food process-
4ng plants--canneries and quick-frozen establishments'
These, m turn, stimulate the need for `warehousing
and shipping facilities, and ,for related businesses
specializing-in supplies for both the agricidturist and the processor.
o , , j .
All this, of cour'se, means greater prosperity for ,everyone
--wider employment, increased opportunity for men and
women to go into business for themselves, enlarged pay-
rolls, and a resulting upswing in community buying power.
All citizens bnefit, efther directly or indirectly.
The operation of a,successful truck farm is a business--
and the operator a ,businessman. He faces the same prob-
lems which face any other businesSmm or industrialist.
He must mgke •essential investments before a new truck
farm can b es,tablished or a present .operation expanded.
Money must be invested in land and buildings and
equipment. Time, and work md planning must be invested
as well. II :these things represeiit the risk taken by the truck farmer -- risks
which are present 'i any business operation.
Mason Countyand all AmeriCa---was foilnded and built-6n
the fundamental principle that'any man Or woman should 'have
the right to workshould have theright to "start a business of
his own and to enjoy the frtttts of his labor. As a result, no
other nation in the whole world can approach the iritltistrial
might of America. In no other nation has the standard of living
risen so high for the individual willing to work for it. This
results from the American Way of 'Life, and 'is the pttthWay to
an even greater America. VTly ,change :it?
The sponsors of this series of'advertisemens devoted to com-
rAunity betterment are citizens of this community. They own
homes here. Their Children go .to school here. Theyhave a deep
sense of respondibflity to the individual citizens and to changes
• which will affect the community. They are interested in devel-
oping a healthy community ,following the American Way. of
Life, and .thus keeping America anCl YvIasdn County Strong ,for
the generations tocome.
W
A ,man or womn does not take such risks for nothing. They must be assured
the opportunity of eventual return on these investments---t!he freedom to enjoy
that :profit if their Ventures succeed.
I
That eedom--cogether with ,the ;ideal of individual enterprise -- is the very
oundation of meVican progress. Itgives men and women the incentive to plan
nd build a future. It provides "the "reason .why" men and Women are willing,
and 'eager, to risk time and oney and work in new or "expanded entet20rises.
They may start in a modest Way, on a small truck frm,
perhaps. Bfft as the venture prospers they must lire
others !to help them, and thus they become creators of
jobs- stimulators of community purchasing power and
community wealfh.
Incentive--individual incentive and ambitionis a force
which spreads. From small beginnings great industries
grow, :und 'these industries create benefits which are felt
throughout all the land. That incentive is basic-vitai.
And i't springs from America's fundamental ideal, freedom
of enterprise.
With it, the :future is a goal and a promise for everyone.
