It-old people," says Stuart McCorkle, project director for the nutrition program for the elderly. "I am deeply concerned that while there have been programs for ahnost every other grouping of people, not until recently with the coming of senior programs to Mason and Thurston Counties has there been an active interest in the day-by-day problems faced by older Americans• "After all, they are the ones who pioneered the West, paved the roads, built the schools. They deserve the very best that society can provide for them in their retiring years•" McCorkle, born and reared in Seattle, came to Shelton on February 1 to work in Thurston and Mason Counties in a program under the auspices of the senior services of th6 two counties. "The program," McCorkle explains, "is funded by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare/Community Services Administration through the Washington State Office on Aging with some local contributions and funding on a matching basis. "Basic legislation was the Older Americans Act of 1965, an attempt to provide a wide spectrum of services, including nutritious meals, to American citizens over the age of 60 years• "I agree with the act," McCorkle declares, "that it is of the utmost importance for older citizens to become aware of the many kinds of assistance already on the books for the express purpose of helping them to live a more enriched life. Many persons do not know that these opportunities exist." The present program was initiated 18 months ago by Thurston County Parks and Recreation Department and has Stuart McCorkle since grown to a program now administered by Senior Services of Mason Thurston Counties headquartered in Shelton. Approximately 43,000 nutritious hot meals are served each year in seven centers located throughout the two-county area where a wide variety of services is offered to senior citizens. Stuart McCorkle lived as a child in a rural setting at the north end of Seattle. "I grew up with horses and cows, chickens and ducks and all Sheryal Balding honored Sheryal Balding was named teachers in Shelton. "i am staying in Shelton motels while I look for a country home. I want to have, animals again." McCorkle is an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys hunting, fishing, backpacking and camping. In Seattle he participates on community teams to play football, soccer and rugby. "My true hobby is people," he maintains. "I like to work with youth as well as with the elderly. I'v been active in YMCA. I've been a Boy Scout leader and a Big-Brother advisor. I also served on the board of North Central Council of Camp Fire." Stuart McCorkle was graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in political science• Sixty hours of graduate study were completed in several eastern universities. Although the nutrition program is now serving at funded capacity, the Shelton office is always anxious to learn of special hardship cases. Persons needing assistance may telephone 426:2568 or 426-2571 or may write to Mason County Senior Center, 208 Grove Street, Shelton. -School Menu-- Menu for Shelton Elementary & High Schools MAKE SOUND LUMBER YOUR LUMBER!
