'/d BALANCE BEAMER Lisa Brown of the Climbers works on her handstand this week as the league-runner-up Shelton High gymnasts prepare for Saturday's district championships in Battleground. Brown is a freshman. After first league win i Wrestl rs gear up for district A season of team frustrations will be set aside this Saturday when the Climber wrestlers compete'in the district championships at Timberline. Though as a squad they've authored but a 1-10 league record, the Climbers have a shot at the whole works now, and the records mean little more than seeding. "Every one of our guys could go to regionals," said Climber Coach Dick Wentz this week. "All they have to do is win two matches." Of course, there will be several able-bodied opponents bent on doing just the same thing, so it's not as easy as it sounds. But the top four individuals in each weight class advance to the February 1%18 regionals, again right here in ShaRon, and one loss at district does not an elimination make. Here's Shelton's district line.up, with each wrestler's seeding and league record following: 101 - Tom Kamin, freshman, 4-7, sixth seed. 108 - Jerry Newcomb, sophomore, 10-1, first seed. 115 - Bruce Parker, sophomore, 6-5, fifth seed. Mike Good 8-4; 108 -- Jerry Newcomb (S) by forfeit; 115- Bruce Parker(S) p. Dave Lock 3:12; 122 -- Matt Kamin (S) by injury default over Matt Izatt, second round; 129 -- Brant Woods (S) p. Michael Carter 0:22; 135 -- Russell Skolrood H) d. Don Truini 13-0; 141 -- nan Willis (S) d. Phil Voight 5-1; 148 -- Rick Haskell (S) d. 122 - Matt Kamin, senior, 5.1, fifth seed. 129 - Brent Woods, freshman, 4-5, fourth seed. 135 - Dan Truini, freshman, 2-7, fifth seed. 141 - Brian Willis, senior, 7-3-1, third seed. 148 - Rick Haskell, senior, 7-2-2, third seed. 158 - Kevin Ridout, senior, 6-2, third seed. 168 - Mike Buechel, freshman, 6-5, second seed. 178 - Brad Dunbar, sophomore, 2-8, seventh seed. 190 - probably no entry. Hwt. - definitely no entry. Wentz sees good state possibilities in Newcomb, a state competitor as a mere freshman last year; Matt Kamin, who was sixth at I01 as a sophomore; and each of his wrestlers from 141.158 - veterans Sillis, Haskell and Ridout. "But anything can happen at this time of the year/' he reminded. The Climbers may have a psychological buoy, however. In their final dual match of the year, last Thursday against Hoquiam, the Climbers scored their only league victory, a 39-21 crowd-pleaser in the Minidome. District's round-one competition is set to get underway at 11 a.m. Saturday at Timberline High School. The finals will begin at 7:30 p.m. Shelton 39, Hoquiam 21 101 -- Tom Kamin (S) d. After trailing by only one at 21-20 SHS swimmers go down in darkest Aberdeen Shelton High's swim team finished the regular season on a somewhat dreary note last week, but regional competition is in the offing and the prospects are quite good. Despite the fact that the Climbers closed with a 53-30 loss in Aberdeen, their 3-3 record ties them for third place - their best finish in years - and several of their standout stars are eyeing high placements when Tumwater Valley h0sts the annual regional competition. ........ 1 Among those hopefuls are junior Eric Valley, a state qualifier in two events already; senior Dave Wicken, who's qualified in one; and relay team members Valley, Dug Coleman, Barry Cochran and Allan Eaton, who've qualified in the 400 free.
