North Mason High
School junior April Griffiths
bowled in her first 2A/3A
WIAA State Girls Bowling
Championship on Friday,
Feb. 4 at Narrows Plaza
Bowl in University Place
with a mixture of emotions.
"I was really nervous
and really excited at the
same time," she said. "I
couldn't wait to start."
Individual games played
on Friday rank those who
are on competiting teams
as well as the individuals
who bowled well enough at
district tournaments from
non-qualifying teams.
Griffiths finished 44th
overall out of 70 bowlers in
2A/3A after she earned an
average of 142 in her six
games, starting off strong
with a 152 in the first game.
But her scores would de-
cline in the following games
- 150, 140, 139 and 120.
The tournament used
the shark oil pattern, which
more than a few coaches
didn't agree with.
"This was a really tough
shot," said Kristy Whitcher,
North Mason head coach.
"Way too much oil."
"It was definitely hard
to find the dry [spots],"
Griffiths said.
But Griffiths finished
with a score of 152, who
said she was watching how
the other bowlers in her
class compensated for the
professional level oil pat-
tern used.
"I met a lot of new people
and saw a lot of different
styles," she said. "I watched
some of the girls and where
they were standing. It
helped."
Griffiths was the lone
North Mason bowler at the
state tourname _t, but she
was glad to have her coach
"She was just telling me
to stay behind"the ball, stay
focused and do my best,"
Griffiths said.
