By DEAN SIEMON
Well, at least I didn't fin-
ish in last place in the Jour-
nal's NFL playoff challenge.
Congratulations to re-
porter Natalie Johnson for
winning, beating Kelly Rior-
dan and showing that pick-
ing based on team colors can
work.
I probably should have
included our Wild Card
Round picks (or our edi-
tor Jesse Mullen has said I
should have), but it didn't
matter too much in the end,
because I, for once, didn't
finish in last place.
This year's Super Bowl
was another great match-up
with a lot of great plays and
some key defensive plays.
It hurts me as a die-hard
Chicago Bears fan to say
this, but I was rooting for
the Green Bay Packers. Not
only was I rooting for them
to win so I wouldn't finish at
the bottom of the challenge,
but because my girlfriend
wouldn't let me pick Pitts-
burgh.
When Ben Roethlisburg-
er's fourth down pass in the
last minute of the fourth
quarter fell incomplete, my
girlfriend, one of the more
vocal anti-Steelers fans,
said "Payback."
Aaron Rodgers proved he
deserved to take over as the
Green Bay Packers quarter-
back for Brett Favre.
He also recived a pretty
cool championship belt for
winning the Super Bowl.
Now if only we can keep
Favre in the past (and no
more unretirements), Rodg-
ers can continue the legacy
that the organization felt
the former California QB
was destined to be.
Many fans here in Wash-
ington have been vocal
about their dislike for the
Pittsburgh Steelers.
I was convinced after
the first half that the game
would be a blowout by the
third quarter, especially
with Roethlisburger having
those minor, nagging inju-
ries - when separate they
aren't a big deal but can re-
ally add up to a painful toll
on a player this late in the
season.
But give the Steelers
some credit, they didn't give
up and it was a good back
and forth second half.
Yet, the Green Bay de-
fense was too much for the
Steelers. Not only was Clay
Mattews dominate in the
linebacker position, but
Nick Collins had what I con-
sider one of the more memo-
rable interceptions in Super
Bowl history.
Outside of the Lombardi
Trophy returning to "Title
Town," there were a few
things I learned from watch-
ing the only thing that gets
more interest leading up to
Super Bowl Sunday than
the game, the commercials:
Beer can be used
mmercalism
whenever you need. to fix
up the old house.
Some people really
like Dorito's (possibly too
much).
Cans of diet soda
can be used as deadly
weapons.
The next time I
write a screenplay for a
movie, I plan on having a
beer truck drive through
a random scene to earn
product placement.
For some reason,
Vin Diesel still finds
work. This surprises
me. But at least Dwayne
"The Rock" Johnson is in
the new Fast and the Fu-
rious movie.
There are way too
many car commericals
that either try to hard to
be creative or can be too
complicating for the av-
erage viewer (expection
for Volkswagon's mini-
Darth Vader ad, funny).
Just like most years, we
had a good crop of adver-
tisements in one of the most
commercialized events.
I also had some random
thoughts while watching
this year's championship
game, which ranged from
involving the game some of
the off-the-field reporting
that would be used as filler
between plays.
After seeing George
W. Bush and John Mad-
den sitting next to each
other, why couldn't that
duo be a sitcom? I'm sure
Fox will have a timeslot
once Chicago Code fails.
Green Bay's offen-
sive lineman Bryan BUl-
aga may have been wear-
ing a helmet that was
way too small. Seeing his
face compressed behind
the facemask reminded
me of Chris Farley's "fat
guy, little coat" song.
Why would people
pay more than $200 each
to stand outside Jerry
Jones Stadium to watch
the game on a television
(especially when it's be-
low 40 degrees)?
With the poten-
tial lockout, will this be
the last relevant foot-
ball game that doesn't
involve booster clubs or
computers?
My DVR's fast for-
ward finally came in use
when we got to the half-
time show.
Why can't they book
a decent muscial half-
time show? I vote for ei-
ther Metallica or Tena-
cious D.
Oh well, this was a fun
Super Bowl, but now we
have the upcoming March
Madness college basketball
tournament to look forward
to on the schedule.

reporter would like to re-
