Journal photo Justin Johnson ’Shelton’s Mackiewicz Wins at 170 pounds; 9 Climber boys regionals-bound By Justin Joiison justin@masoncountycom Led by senior Ryan Mackiewicz’s commanding win in the 170—pound final, the Shelton High School boys wrestling team finished third overall at the Ev- ergreen League 'subregion'al wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Mini-Dome in Shelton. W.F Westwon the team title with 386 points. Ab erdeen was second with 208.5 and Shelton tallied 174.5. In all, nine Shelton wrestlers qualified for this week’s Region 3 championship 'meet Saturday at Washougal High School. , Mackiewicz, dominated the mats at the Mini- Dome all'day Saturday, pinning Roche’ster’s Jassiel Tinoco in 2 minutes, 59 seconds in the quarterfi- nals and Tumwater’s Aaron Olyan in 4:53 in the semifinals. , In the title match, Mackiewicz'faced W.F. West’s Waylen Land, winning a 13-1 decision after nearly ' pinning Land on three separate Occasions. : . The Climbers’ Tyler Fleshman (126 pounds), Cameron Egbert (132), Drew Schirman (138) and Mario Boxley (182) advanced to the championship match of their respective weights. Shelton’s Daniel Tausa (285), Trevor Rodeback (195) and Logan Peach 132) finished third, and Cole Borden (120) and J axon Wolfe (160) were fourth. Al nine qualified for the regional round. Shelton girls Allfive members of the Shelton High School girls wrestling team qualified for regionals after finishing. in the top five at the girls 3.1 subregional Saturday see wnssné, pageAe24 Super Bowl'Week is. here With a Hollywbod~ storyline, This game, on paper, favors the son capped off by the biggest game of the year: Super Bowl LVI. The Los Angeles Rams face the . Cincinnati Bengals for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. From a regiOnal angle, there is some rooting inter- est, and there is no more a localstar for me (regional for Mason County residents) than Rams’ wide receiver Cooper Kupp, a native of the Palm ‘ Springs or Washington (I don’t think It’s almost the end of football sea- , Palm Springs, California, is anything like Yakima, but I have never been to Palm Springs to confirm). Kupp went to Davis High School,th my Wash— ~ ington State Cougars while playing at Eastern Washington University and has turned into a superstar in the NFL. While I will. not be rooting for AAID MAN'S MUSINGS the Rams as they are the Seahawks’ NFC West rival, if the Rams do win, I will be happy for Kupp. Los Angeles defensive lineman Greg Gaines and safety Taylor Rapp played for the University of Washing- ton, and punter Johnny Hekker was born in Bothell. Cincinnati backup quarterback Jake Browning also : played‘for the Huskies. . The Cincinnati Bengals are the biggest surprise of the season. It’s hard not to root for Cool Joe Burrow, and rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr ‘ Chase has been sensational. Cincin- nati features former Seahawks’ cor- nerback Tre Flowers, who was waived by Seattle in October. , I can see Cincinnati winning» this game, having defeated the top—seed Titans and No. 2 seed Chiefs to get to the Super Bowl. The team on offense and defense has stepped up in key situations to get Cincinnati to this point. Rams, as the Little Creek sportska will tell you —— they are a 45-point favorite as of Tuesday. That makes sense, giVen they have a formidable defensive line in Aaron Donald and Von Miller along with Gaines. On of- fense, the Rams boast two solid wide receivers in Kupp and Odell Jr., and Matthew Stafford has played well to get this team to the champion- ship game. . Outside of the game itself, I’m also looking forward to the halftime show, featuring all the artists I grew uplis- tening to,-inclu‘ding Dr. Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dog. I have seen perform live and itywasohe-of the best . see MUSING, page A127
