About 30 people jumped
into the 48-degree water of
the Hood Canal in Union
Saturday, raising $5,000 for
local emergency services.
"I thought it was a good
turnout," said organizer
Don Minor. "Unfortunately
we had that rain all day."
The event, organized by
the Hood Canal Lions Club,
took place for the second
consecutive year at the dock
at the Alderbrook Resort
and Spa in Union. In pre-
vious years, divers jumped
from the Port of Hoodsport
dock.
The Lions Club donates
money raised from the event
each year to programs such
as the Mason County Sheriffs
Office K-9 Unit, dive team,
search and rescue, chaplain
programs, and Mason County
Fire District 6 in Union.
The plunge also raises
money for the Lions Club
International's sight and
hearing programs.
The Lions Club awards
the top fundraisers for the
event in three categories
-- emergency worker, com-
munity member and youth
younger than 18.
Jadyn Redmann, 11, was
the top fundraiser for the
fourth consecutive year,
raising $1,450. The Mason
County Sheriffs Office won
the emergency worker cat-
egory with $800 and Justin
Gravatt, the Alderbrook
Golf and Yacht C1Qb's pro-
fessional golfer, raised the
most of any community
member with about $260,
Minor said.
Major sponsors included
The Tides Restaurant, Taco-
ma Power, Green Diamond
Resource Co. and KMAS
Radio.
