mid-year graduation ceremony

Students who graduate from CHOICE
Alternative School in Shelton do not fol-
low the traditional educational path.
The 11 students who received diplo-
mas at the school's mid-year gradu-
ation ceremony Feb. 5 include youths
who are living on their own, CHOICE
Alternative School Principal Sta-
cey Anderson told the audience in the
school's theater. Some are parents, she
said.
"Each of you has overcome obstacles to
be here tonight," Anderson said.
Anderson told the students it was a
joy to watch them build their skills and
urged them to believe in themselves. She
also praised the friends and relatives who
supported the students.
About 200 people attended the cer-
emony.
The new graduates are Delaney Bax-
ter, Jasmine Coleman, Shashoney Fen-
ton, Haley Free, Carina Garcia, Madison
League, Chris Minish, Katie Morgan,
Kristoffer Dane Pennington, Damian
Pierre and Skyler Sparks.
Baxter was one of three students to
speak at the ceremony. She earned her
diploma at age 20 despite giving birth to
two children. She has a third baby due in
June.
"It was hard, but I did it," Baxter said.
But she added, "Without those two, I
wouldn't have made it here."
Garcia talked about dropping out of
several schools before a friend at church
told her, "Giving up is not an option."
"If I could graduate and still attend
this school, I would," Garcia said. But she
added that it is time to move on.
