About 75 people attended a meet-
ing Tuesday night in Belfair to learn
more about a proposal to combine Cen-
tral Mason Fire and EMS with the
North Mason Regional Fire Authority
(NMRFA).
"We're just looking to get under-
way with an exploratory process," said
NMRFA Chief Beau Bakken. "We do
the exact same thing ... yet we do it
completely independently of each oth-
er. Coming together, working together
makes much more sense."
Community members at the meet-
ing were invited to ask questions of
fire district staff and members of the
two boards of commissioners present
at the meeting, held at the North Ma-
son School District administrative of-
rices.
"The intent is not to be exclusive, it's
to be inclusive," said Central Mason
board member Tommy Taylor.
NMRFA board chairperson Kel-
ley McIntosh said the two boards had
not yet had formal discussions about
whether to pursue the consolidation.
She said Tuesday's meeting allowed
board members to get input from dis-
trict residents.
The boards plan to create a steer-
ing committee, made up of residents,
board members, district staff, union
representatives and other stakehold-
ers, to advise the NMRFA and Cen-
tral Mason boards as they move for-
ward.
Bakken said a previous fire district
consolidation in North Mason led to
better, more efficient fire and EMS ser-
vice.
In 2013, residents of Mason County
Fire District 2 in Belfair, and Fire Dis-
trict 8 in Tahuya, voted to combine the
two districts into the NMRFA.
"The results have far exceeded our
expectations," Bakken said.
NMRFA board member Shelby
Blackwell said the process of creating
the regional fire authority was fright-
ening at first.
"It was a learning process and we
still learn from it every day," he said.
If the boards from the NMRFA and
Central Mason decide to move forward
with the consolidation, Central Mason
residents could vote to join the regional
fire authority.
McIntosh said the boards have not
decided if they would pursue that op-
tion.
McIntosh said other small fire dis-
tricts in the state and county are look-
ing into consolidation with other dis-
tricts to improve service.
"I think we're seeing a corner being
turned," she said. "Many of them are
recognizing that there's a greater good
in coming together."

plans, contact Central Mason Chief

prevent bacteria from turning into plaque buildup. The Ameri-
can Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per
day. It is far better to floss once a day and do a thorough job
rather than several times a day and miss areas of the mouth by
doing it quickly.
Children should be urged to floss regularly in addition to
brushing. However, flossing can be cumbersome for youngsters
who have yet to develop the dexterity needed to manipulate
dental floss. There are many products available and techniques
that can be used to assist children with cleaning between their
teeth. The following are some flossing tips for kids.
• Begin the introduction to floss early. The younger children
are introduced to floss, the more likely they are to embrace
flossing as part of their oral hygiene routine.
• Show visual proof of the benefits of flossing. Oftentimes,
children are more likely to respond to something they can see.
Show pictures of dental decay and what occurs when proper
oral hygiene is not followed. This may help make the concept of
flossing more attractive.
