FLY ON THE SIDELINE
Last week, the
gym in the cur-
rent North Ma-
son High School saw
its final boys basket-
ball games.
Steve Hackett
doesn't like to put the
attention on himself.
He's the head boys By EMILY
basketball coach, but HANSON
the success of the
team is because of its
athletes.
That doesn't change the
fact that his final game in this
gym was significant.
As the buzzer rang at the
end of North Mason's 54-48
victory Feb. 3 against
Kingston, Hackett
balled his hands into
fists and shook them
up and down with a
grin forming across
his face.
"To close it out
with a victory was
just extra sweet,"
said Hackett, who'd
joked earlier in the
game that he'd be
stealing a piece of the floor
that night.
Hackett graduated from
North Mason. He was Larry
Skogstad's assistant coach for
two years. He's near the end
of his fifth year as head coach.
Hackett also figures he's been
in the room for hundreds, if
not thousands, of open gyms.
He said it's hard to pick
three memories as his favor-
ites, but a few popped into his
mind right away.
"As a fan, my favorite mem-
ory is watching Casey Reyn-
olds hitting a half-court shot
at the buzzer to beat White
River in overtime," Hackett
said. "I think I was in sixth or
seventh grade and everyone
rushed the floor."
As a player for the Bull-
dogs, Hackett's favorite mem-
ory was also from a playoff
game.
"My senior year we were re-
ally good and played Fife here
for a district playoff game,"
he said. =They were ranked
in the top 10 in state and our
gym was so packed they were
selling tickets to people to sit
in the lunchroom and watch
it on TVs they set up. We won
the game and that place was
crazy."
Hackett's most prized
coaching memory was his
first career victory in 2011.
The Bulldogs defeated North
Kitsap.
"That one just meant a lot
to me because it was a dream
since I was in 10th grade to be
the head coach here," Hackett
said.
Second to that first victory
was his final victory in the
Belfair gym.
"Closing out the gym with
a victory that pushed us into
the playoffs is pretty cool,"
Hackett said. "I normally try
to avoid moments where the
light comes on me because I
want the kids to get all the
credit because they do all the
work, but after Tuesday, I did
take a photo of me and my
family on the court because
that place has meant so much
to me."
