Pop, folk and jazz are set to collide
in an immersive, high-tech show the
Mason County Concert Association
presents next week in Shelton.
Derik Nelson & Family is set to
perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Shelton
High School's Performing Arts Cen-
ter. The performers are no strangers
to the Pacific Northwest. As alumni of
Capital High School in Olympia, they
frequently perform at local venues.
One of their largest stages was Centu-
ryLink Field, where they sang the na-
tional anthem for 69,000 people before
a Seattle Seahawks game.
Riana Nelson said in an interview
with the Shelton-Mason County Jour-
nal being able to sing at such an iconic
location in the Pacific Northwest was
exhilarating, especially with her par-
ents standing on the field.
"The adrenaline rush was one thing,
but also the energy from all of those
people in the stadium was a perform-
er's dream," she said. "It goes so fast
it's 90 seconds -- so you know leading
up to it that it's going to fly by, so you
try to hold every moment in your heart
and in your head, and really enjoy the
experience. And I think we did. I have
beautiful memorieS from that day."
The family trio has been touring
the United States and beyond with the
show, and they are eager to offer some
homegrown entertainment.
Derik was a regular for four years on
the TV show "Glee" as a leadguitarist,
and was a singer for shows including
"How I Met Your Mother," "The Voice,"
"New Girl," "Raising Hope" and "Go
On." Dalten appeared on several epi-
sodes of "Glee" and "It's Always Sunny
in Philadelphia," and orchestrates the
group's high-tech show. Riana, a cast-
ing associate for the show "Empire,"
serves on the board of directors for the
Washington Center for the Perform-
ing Arts. She also works as the band's
manager.
The trio logged 30,000 miles last
year, traveling the country in the car
together, but Riana said recent inter-
national trips to Moldova and Albania
were some of the most memorable ex-
periences so far on the road.
Part of the trip, facilitated by the
U.S. Department of Defense, involved
educational outreach at schools in re-
mote villages.
"The very first day on that contract
we went to a village in southern Mol-
dova and got to meet all these incredi-
ble middle-school kids, and did a work-
shop with them," she said. "This is a
school that doesn't have power or heat
or hot water for most of the building.
Knowing that they live in non-ideal
conditions for the winter, and seeing
how excited they were and how proud
they were to have us there working
with them was just amazing. I felt like
we really were able to show up as our-
selves Being there with those kids
and singing for them was really eye
opening and heartwarming."
Riana said it was an interesting con-
trast to the group's technology-driven
performance, which incorporates a 20-
foot video display, Through them, De-
rik's interactive "clones" showcase a
variety of instruments, including sax-
ophone, bass, drums and keyboards,
backed by three-part harmonies from
the siblings. Dalten's digital designs
use auditory and lighting elements to
explore different settings as the musi-
cians dabbling in everything from the
Eagles to Michael Jackson to Fleet-
wood Mac.
