Shelton Police Chief Darrin Moody can't recall a
similar incident in his nearly five years on the job
in Shelton. Domino's Pizza area manager Christie
Odekirk says the ownership group of the Shelton
store hasn't seen something like it in 30 years of
owning the Shelton franchise.
Regardless, all can agree that employees and law
enforcement responded properly Sunday night af-
ter an alleged gunpoint robbery at the North First
Street restaurant.
"We were just talking about that, and since I've
been here, and I'm trying hard to remember the last
time a business was robbed with a gun," Moody told
the Shelton-Mason County Journal on Tuesday. "I'm
not saying we haven't had gun crimes, but some-
thing like this is a rare occurrence here."
According to a news release issued Monday morn-
ing by Moody, at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday, a male
armed with a black semiautomatic handgun de-
manded cash from employees working at the store.
The suspect, described as a 5-foot-10 light-skinned
male, possibly in his mid-20s, grabbed a "small
amount of cash" before he fled on foot.
A still image taken from surveillance video at
the Store shows the suspect .wearing a distinc-
tive hooded sweatshirt and camouflage-style cargo
pants. Though Shelton Police, with the help of Ma-
son County Sheriffs Office personnel, quickly estab-
lished a perimeter around the area and a K-9 search
was initiated, the alleged robber remained at large
as of Tuesday afternoon.
Odekirk, Domino's area manager the last 2
years and the sister and sister-in-law of the fran-
chise's owners they also own the Domino's fran-
chise in Hoquiam said all employees are trained
on what to do in the event of a robbery. She says
there were about 25 employees total working Sun-
day.
'We train (employees) to comply - don't fight,
don't argue, just give them what they want and get
them out the door." Odekirk said. "The safety of our
employees is our No. I priority, but my staff handled
it perfectly. I don't think that in a situation like that
it could have gone any better. Most of the crew that
was working in the store at the time didn't even
know it was happening because it was so busy."
Moody and Odekirk both declined to specify ex-
actly how much money the alleged robber got away
with, but both said it wasn't much.
"Not a lot of people pay for things with cash any-
more and with cash drops and everything, cash on
hand was pretty limited," Moody said. "What he got
away with was pretty minimal."
Because there's no nearby highway to the store
for the purpose of a fast getaway, Moody said he be-
lieves the suspect is local to the area.
Odekirk concurred.
"I do believe that it is somebody local and due to
the snow, we were one of the only businesses down-
town that was open at the time." Odekirk said. "And
he was on foot, so I do believe that he was local."
Moody added investigators have yet to find a
link to the suspect through similar robberies in the
area, such as a Feb. 1 armed robbery at an Olympia
Papa Murphys pizza restaurant. On Tuesday morn-
ing, Shelton Police were in the process of reviewing
surveillance video from the time of the robbery from
neighboring Shelton businesses.
"At this point we haven't found any relation to
anything similar, not to say that we won't," Moody
said. '~We put it out to law enforcement agencies
throughout western Washington. We're working
with our partners everywhere to get this taken care
of."
