Jouma/ photo by Justin Johnson By Justin Johnson justin@masoncoun cam The Mary M. Knight boys basketball team is moving on at the District IV tournament, and the Owls are playing some of their best basketball of the season. Sophomore Isaiah Compton scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds to help lead MMK to a decisive 60-40 win over Three Rivers Christian on Feb. 7 at Mary M. Knight High School. The win sent the Owls into the semifinal round of the tournament against Naselle. MMK was originally scheduled to play the Comets on Feb. 9 at Ilwaco High School, but the game was postponed due to the snowstorm impacting Western Washington. As of the Shelton-Mason County Journal's deadline, the game was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oakville High School. Regardless of the outcome against the Com- ets, the Owls (12-8) will play again this week. taking on either Taholah or Firm Foundation Christian. The remainder of the tournament schedule is still to be determined after the fall- out from the snow cleanup. "The boys have made an obvious mental- ity change over the last month of the season," MMK coach Matt Ferrier said. %Ve are hun- gry for more success. The TRC game was the school's first playoffwin since 2012, and one of our kids' biggest sports wins." MMK led 15-6 at the end of the first quar- ter, and extended that lead to 29-14 at half- time thanks to a trio of 3-pointers in the sec- ond quarter. Eddy Krippelcz scored 17 points for the Owls, and Austin Fries added 11. The Washington Interscholastic Ac- tivities Association (WIAA) cancelled all boys and-girls regional wrestling tournaments statewide last week, an unprecedented move after it became apparent that conditions would dete- riorate to the point that many teams could not safely travel to their respec- tive regional sites. Instead, the WIAA expended the Mat Classic tournament to encompass 32 entries up from the normal 16 -- in order to give all regional-qualified wrestlers a chance to compete at the state mee*. "All my guys that were going to wrestle (over the weekend) and alter- nates will go to the (Tacoma) Dome next weekend," North Mason coach Bill McCarty said in an email short- ly after the cancellations were an- nounced. North Mason was one of the sites scheduled to host a regional meet be- fore it was cancelled, and Bulldogs Athletic Director Mark Swofford had worked with the WIAA and his coun- terparts to create several contingency plans before the WIAA ultimately de- cided it wasn't safe enough to proceed. Some regional sites likely could have hosted their events before the weather hit, but the WIAA cancelled all re- gionals in the interest of fairness and equal opportunity. Weigh-in for the state meets begin at 7 a.m. Friday at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, with the action scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. for both North Mason High School and Shelton High School's boys qualifiers. The Highclimber and Bulldog girls wrestlers will weigh in at noon on Fri- day and wrestling begins at 2 p.m. Action resumes at 9:45 a.m. Sat- urday at the Tacoma Dome, with the championship-round matches for all classifications to being at 5 p.m. on six mats.
