Wet Set's tyson qualifies for state CLIMBER MOMENTS at district last weekend in Renton find coaches Rob Phelan (right) and Chad Youngquist (center) variously expressive alongside senior veteran Dan Krafcik between prelim events (top) and senior classmates Tom Kealy (near left) and Tyson Cochran in similarly various postrace demeanor shortly thereafter. Tyson had just assured himself of a state berth by making the championship-finals grade in his breaststroke specialty. In the inset are Tom and Tyson along with fellow senior Jimmy Riley (facing, rear) just before their breaststroke moment of truth Friday evening. men wrap up their Winter Tour James and Henry Fertitta, 69. (tie) _ Joel Watters, Dennis Climbers' dynamic duo split up at the last hurdle By STEVE PATCH Chlorine Climberville's dynamic duo finally got split up last week- end, a state berth in their mutual cross hairs. Veteran seniors Tyson Cochran and Jimmy Riley went into the weekend's West Central District 3A showdown at Hazen High School the respective fifth and seventh seeds in a breaststroke field from which the top six stood to advance to next weekend's all- Washington showdown. Alas, while reigning league champion Tyson made the grade by way of a third- place finish in Sat- urday's champion- ship finale, close friend and reign- ing league runner- up Jimmy came a cropper by the nar- rowest of margins. "Yeah, he came up a little bit short," confirmed Chad Youngquist, who teams with fellow veteran Rob Phelan at the Climber coaching helm. "I was very disappointed for they get times that aren't quite what they're capable of doing. And if they get to come back the second day a lot of times they do a lot bet- ter. "You know, all the pressure is off and all of a sudden: 'Okay, now I can go fast.' And that's unfortu- nately what we see. "You know, the first day we're scratchin' our heads: 'What did we do WRONG!?/' And then the sec- ond day they come back and swim fast. And it's like, 'Okay, they're ready.' " MAKE NO mis- take, added the coach. It's not as though the Climb- ers tanked it Fri- day. "They swam close to their best times," he said. "They didn't swim poor swims. They just didn't get their best swims. And then the next day some of 'em just swam outta their MINDS..." And when does Tyson make his firstall-Washington splash this weekend STATE-BOUND cohort Tyson went a personal-record 1:05.82 for fifth place in Friday night's pre- lims, making the championship finals by one spot, and then nailed down the Climber boys' first state berth in three years by going 1:05.53 for third place Saturday night. Jimmy, meanwhile, missed the championship finals by two places Friday night, when he went 1:08.28 - or about a second shy of his personal best - and came back with a 1:08.39 for eighth-place points Saturday. His best clocking in the event going into district had been a 1:07.12. HURTING? NOT to hear him tell it. "No," said Coach Youngquist, holding forth during Monday's resumption of turnout. "Jimmy would never blame his shoulder on not swimming well in the breast- stroke. But he did hurt himself in the first race - in the IM. And he would never use that excuse. But he's still hurting today. So I don't know if that was it or what. "But, yeah, he got best times in everything else he swam. Just not the one that was really important to him. So..." IN ANY EVENT, said Young- quist, there was plenty of cause for celebration all the same during the Climbers' ride back home. "Our relays did very well," said Coach. "(Senior) Tom Malysch did the backstroke. Had a best time leading off in the medley relay. Breaststroke was Jimmy, and he got a lifetime best in his 50 breast- stroke. Tyson did his butterfly in a lifetime best. And then Markus (senior Berndt) did the freestyle leg, and he did well too. "That relay was only two sec- onds off of an allocation for state there too. You know, they were in reach. That was not something we anticipated at the beginning of the season, and they really dropped a lot of time there. They did a great job." PERFORMING admirably for the Climbers as well, added Youngquist, was the 200 free relay foursome of Berndt, senior class- mate Dan Krafcik, ninth-grader (and Coach's son) Cole Phelan and sophomore Tim Russell. "And then the 400 free re- lay: They made finals," said Youngquist, naming Malysch, Phelan, Riley and Russell. "Tom swam his 100-yard leg of the 400 free relay in 54 seconds, and so did Tim. And those are out- standing times. Both o' those guys came outta there smiling." SO ALL IN ALL a pretty good experience, was it? "Yeah," said Youngquist. "We seem to always have a first-day jit- ters kind of a thing. We don't have a lot of club swimmers that have a lot of experience, and they go to those big meets and sometimes Thursday, February 15, 2007 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Page 23 prelims start at 5," said Youngquist, referring to to- morrow night's slate. "He is in the last event before the relay, so he's probably not gonna swim until close to 7 o'clock.
