More historic firsts: cagers state The boys and girls of Mary M. Knight Owl basketball have seized state tournament berths for the first time in the Matlock school's history. Following the lead of their vol- leyball team, whose girls celebrat- ed their maiden trip to the spikers' state donnybrook this past fall, the hoopsters broke with Knight's never-past-district tradtion last week in the Class 1B tournament in Montesano. The boys took their histor- ic step by beating district foe Lake Quinault 45-34 a week ago Wednesday behind the 17-point performance of senior veteran Sean Brehmeyer. They wound up 1-1 at district, bowing to Oakville 46-30 in Saturday's championship showdown. Knight's boys had gone 10-5 for second place in league and 12-6 overall prior to entering the district fray. Knight's girls, meanwhile, earned their way onto the state guest list by prevailing in their district go-around with Lake Quinault last Thursday, when they improved to 14-6 on the year by way of a 54-24 triumph. Two nights later they too set- tled for second place in the district tourney, bowing 54-56 to the same Taholah team that had beaten them three times already this winter. Veteran sophomore Alicea Scott led the Owls in that cham- pionship clash, tallying a season- high 29 points and adding ten re- bounds. The Owls' matching state berths were their first ever in basketball, and the hoop sport has been going on since at least the early Forties at the Matlock school. The Matlock kids' historic state experiences commence next week in the Sun Dome in Yakima. GIRLS Taholah 14 29 39 56 Mary M. Knight 7 23 40 54 Taholah - Papp 9, Davis, A.
