Fact-finding to start in fire merger

Shelton city commissioners
Monday afternoon approved a
$25,000 contract with a Federal
Way consulting firm to study the
feasibility of consolidating Shel-
ton Fire and Fire District 5 into
one emergency services agency.
The commission voted 3-0 to
approve the contract with Fire
Service Consulting, Incorpo-
rated, with the cost to be evenly
split between the city and fire
district. Reimbursable expenses
would be in addition to the con-
tract.
Mayor John Tarrant said the
consultant's report should be
completed by June 14 and that

seeks volunteers
Mason County Literacy will
have an information night for per-
sons who would like to help adults
improve their reading, writing,
math, computer or language
skills.
Prospective volunteers are
invited to gather at 6 p.m. on
Wednesday, February 21, in the
office at 113 West Railroad Av-
enue. For more intbrmation, call
426-9733.
issues addressed by the consult-
ing firm may include not just
consolidation but annexation
too.
The consultants, city commis-
sioners and Fire District 5 com-
missioners held a joint meeting
on Thursday, February 8, to
discuss the consolidation study.
The consulting firm is composed
of two people, Steve Marstrom
and Dave Crossen, retired fire
chiefs who between them have
more than 60 years of experi-
ence in fire service.
CROSSEN SAID the first
part of the study's process in-
volves information gathering
and will take four weeks. The
consultants will look at the two
departments' financial records,
incident response times, current
:facilities, growth projections
and other data.
Crossen said his firm will set
up offices in Shelton and begin
talking with various stakehold-
ers. He said the firm is interest-
ed in obtaining comments and
recommendations from people
and will do presentations to
service clubs and homeowner
groups.
Next, they will analyze infor-
mation, comparing operations of
the two departments with state
and national fire standards.
Group wants to sell alcohol
A new ownership group of a lim-
ited liability company has applied
for a state license to sell beer and
wine at NE 24131 State Route 3 in
Belfair.
Doing business as Lil' Moe's are
Caren Marie Rich, Roy D. Ward,
Robin Lee Ward, Joseph Henry Ga-
gnon and Diane Kristine Gagnon.
They want to acquire a license is-
sued to H.D.'s Pub.

Richard Thomas Long and $210.20
was the value of the scrap metals
brought at that time. "The other
document is from South Sound
Steel and Recycling, Incorporated,
for $228," Heldreth said. The sec-
ond receipt did not have a date.
Testimony resumed on Janu-
ary 31 with David Kamin, who
said he and Gale Ashby purchased
the building in the fall of 1999. He
said there had been several in-
cidents of theft in October which
continued into November. He said
on November 9 he told Detective
Paul Campbell of the Shelton Po-
lice Department that he noted ad-
ditional damage and requested ad-
ditional patrols. "A few days after
that it seems they were up on the
roof dismantling copper wire," he
said.
