Knight Owls advance in district playoffs By EMILY SON ¸ em, ily@masoneounLy.com gars 19- The Mary M. Knight led the boys' basketball team pulled K n i g h t ahead in a close game for O w 1 s a victory in the first round of the District IV 1B Boys' Basketball Tournament last week. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Knight Owls played at home against the Seton Catholic Cougars, winning 57-45. Senior Eric Johnson opened scoring for the Knight Owls with a layup shot early in the game and the Owls kept the Cougars from scoring for nearly the first minute• The two teams played close for most of the first quarter, with MMK up 8-6 with 3:49 remaining. From that point, however, "the Knight Owls went on to in- crease their lead to 18-10 go- ing into the second quarter• "We started off real slow tonight," head coach Tim Diggle said. Johnson and senior Sean Sexton led the team in the first quarter with six points each. In the second quarter, Seton Catholic outscored the Knight Owls 13-8, keeping MMK off the board for more than one minute until junior Nick Dierkop scored on a la- yup shot. Turnovers. fouls and trouble rebounding hurt the Owls as the Cougars came back to bring the score with- in three points in the quar- ter. At the half. the Knight Owls were up 26-23• In the third quarter, both teams played each other close once again, each scor- ing 12 points. MMK main- tained its three-point lead. Junior Cory O'Neil put up half of the Knight Owls points scored in this quar- ter. Following behind Sex- ton's lead, Johnson scored 11 points while O'Neil and'Di- erkop put up 10 each. Junior Kyle Willey and freshman Chase Robecker rounded out the scoring with eight and four points, respectively. "We tried to slow the game back down to set our pace and not let Se- ton Catholic set it," Diggle said. "We ended up adjust- ing our offense to something we weren't used to. They plugged the high-post so we ran a low-post and a high- post, which intends to over- load one end of the court." Sexton said he thinks the team has to move its feet a little more and recognize the little things while on the court. The Knight Owls are set to play next at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb, 18, against Columbia Adventist at Mon- tesano High School• Diggle said the team would be working on free throws and changing up its offense this week.
