Shelton senior forward Patrick Wednesday, Feb. 8, Fabrizio drives toward the hoop during the Highclimbers' final game of the Journal photo by Emily Hanson season, at home against Olympia on . Five Shelton seniors honored at last game By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com The lights in the Shelton Mini Dome were mostly off, the stands were empty, the building was quiet, the scoreboard had been cleared and the game was over but one Shelton boys' basketball player was still in his uniform. On Wednesday, Feb. 8, senior guard Curtis Wuestner sat on the sideline of the basketball court in l~i's usual game chair staring at the court. This was Wuestner's -- and four other Shelton seniors' -- final basketball game as a Highclimber and he wasn't ready to leave the court yet. But he didn't want to talk about it. Head coach Mark Jensen said he thought the team played like they have all season against South Kitsap. FRIDAY: "I thought we played hard but we just Olympia ...... 56 didn't shoot the ball," Jensen added. "We Shelton... ..... 35 didn't turn it over an enormous number of times, but we had trouble scoring. For the most part, I thought we defended pretty well." Junior guard Dakota Andrews led the Highclimbers with 12 points, shooting 5-for-9. In the team's final game against Olympia, Jensen said early turnovers led to easy baskets for the Bears. "I thought we defended well and. did a good job of attack- ing their zone," Jensen added. "I thought the second half we played fairly well." Sophomore guard Colton Hubble led the Highclimbers with 10 points while senior guard Kasey Thompson put up six: Wuestner and freshman forward Sean Gorman both scored four. The Olympia game was the final game for five seniors: Wuestner, Thompson guard Austin Schirato, forward Thomas Cook and forward Patrick Fabrizio. "It could've been better, but I'm happy for all my senior teammates and the effort they put in this year," Cook said. "I'd say we worked hard and improved as a team. I feel we are only lacking a [2011 national college player of the year] Jimmer Fredette." Over the season, Wuestner was the highest-scoring se- nior for the Highclimbers with 100 points over 20 games. Wuestner passed out 11 assists, snatched eights steals and grabbed 51 total rebounds.. ....... The next highest-scoring senior was Schirato with 93 over 18 games. Schirato also had 20 assists, 19 steals and 84 total rebounds. Fabrizio scored 81 points over 20 games with 72 total rebounds while Thompson scored 53 points over 20 games with 11 assists, 11 steals and 34 total rebounds. Finally, Cook scored 46 points over 18 games with six steals, two blocks and 46 total rebounds. Jensen said he thought the team dealt with adversity really well this season. "They played hard, which is hopefully a good sign for their futures," he said. "Sticking to it is a really big thing and something as a coach you hope the kids learn." He said that with such a wide range of grade levels among the team (five seniors, one junior, two sophomores and one freshman) there will be more returning varsity ex- perience next season. "You would hope the younger returning kids will build on what they did this season," Jensen added. "That kind of depends on what the kids do in the off-season. It sounds like there's a group of them interested in playing together this summer." Page C-6 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, Februad] 16, 2012
