? She held it in as long as she
could.
- *In the seconds after EliBeth Cer-
vantes became the first girls wres-
tler. from Shelton High School to
win a regional title in 14 years, she
danced her way through congratu-
latory fist bumps. and short hugs
from her teammates and coaches
until she reached her father, Henry.
As father and daughter em-
braced, the emotion flewed.
' A dream realized, but a tale not
quite finished.
“It feels great; Being able to feel
like I’ve accomplished more and
that I’m being a better wrestler,”
Cervantes said. “Going'from barely
qualifying (forstate) to now being
the number one» and having that
secure spot. It feels pretty great,
especially knowing that it’s gonna
give me a better chance at state.”
Cervantes, who wrestles at
145 pounds, pinned all three
of her opponents during Sat-

Shelton had five wrestlers fin-
ish second in their weight class-
es to lead the Highclimbers to a
fifth-place finish at the Region 3
wrestling tournament Saturday
in Aberdeen.
“This team has been incred—
ibly steady all season,” Shelton
coach Chris Lacy told the Jour-
nal in an email. “We have had
a consistent mental approach»
and readiness all season. We
wrestled well at subregionals,
but some of our wrestlers felt
too much pressure. Our regional
wrestlers seemed to be poised,
this allowed them to wrestle
freely for the most part. At re-
gionals, we qualified seven of
our nine wrestlers to the state
meet.” I ‘
This is the first time since
1977 that seven Shelton wres-
tlers have qualified for state.
