Port approves contrac:t wi :h :orlstruction company
By NATALIE JOHNSON
New construction at the Mason
County PUD 3 Johns Prairie op-
erations center site has brought
construction jobs to the area, and
now, has brought money to the
Port of Shelton as well.
The Port of Shelton commis-
sioners approved a contract with
Rushforth Construction to rent a
port owned building during their
meeting on Tuesday.
Rushforth is the contractor in
charge of the construction of the
PUD 3's Johns Prairie Operations
Center.
"To make a long story short,
this is a contract with a company
called Rushforth Construction ...
they are looking for a facility to
house their steel," port executive
director John Dobson said.
The commission only reviewed
the contract, Dobson said, be-
cause it fell outside his authority
to approve it.
"The rent would be a little over
$7,000 per month and my limita-
tions are at $2,000 per month,"
Dobson said.
Rushforth plans to rent the
space for at least two months, but
could stay longer if they continue
to have local projects, Dobson said.
"Sounds pretty good to me,"
commissioner Tom Wallitner
said.
Several members of the public
in attendance commented on the
lack of description in the agenda
item, which simply read, "con-
tract ratification."
Members of the public, includ-
ing Tom Davis and Roslynne Reed
suggested that the commissioners
should consider making all agen-
da items more descriptive, to give
members of the public an idea of
what would actually happen dur-
ing a commission meeting.
Commissioner Jay Hupp stat-
ed that port agendas usually only
contain a brief title for each piece
of business to discuss, and often,
commissioners don't even know
exactly what they will be review-
ing in the meeting.
"It's not uncommon at all to not
know the details," Hupp said.
Clarifcation
According to Port of Shelton commis-
sioner Jack Miles and his attorney, John
Bonin, there are several clarifications
that need to be made to last week's arti-
cle, "Miles' harassment claim dismissed."
The article states that Miles' harass-
ment complaint against port executive
director John Dobson was dismissed by
the judge without prejudice, which is ac-
curate, however, Miles said that it does
not tell the whole story.
"When we first went into court there
were some things that I was wanting in
order to drop the anti harassment com-
plaint," Miles said. "John's (Dobson) at-
torney agreed to that."
Miles said that the two parties met
in the hallway prior to the district court
hearing and agreed on the conditions on
which Miles would drop the complaint.
"I said I would like a few things to be
spelled out, he is not to be alone with
me in the office, we can communicate
by email only if it's port business and if
we have to meet a third party has to be
present," Miles said. "We told the judge
we had an agreement and the judge dis-
missed it without prejudice."
