She passed peacefully with family at her side. Hilde was born February 27, 1931 in Essen, Germany to Johann and Maria (Siegenbruk) Mueller. Hilde was the youngest of eight children. In her early years in Germany, she worked as a waitress. On July 5, 1957, she married Martin Murrell Crabtree. Following nine years with the U.S. Army, the family settled down in Shelton to raise their eight children. The Olympic Mountain Range you see as you drive north on Hwy. 101, was the deciding factor. Hilde would say, "That was the most beautiful sight, all covered with snow. I knew this is where we should settle." In 1969, the family moved to Matlock and then to Dayton in 1972. After the kids were all gone, the couple moved back into Shelton. Although Hilde considered herself a homemaker and not that raising eight kids didn't keep her busy enough, she had also worked many years for Hiawatha, as both a picker and processor. (This was back when Hiawatha had their little white buildings down on First Street.) After moving to Dayton, she took a job as a cashier/clerk for the Dayton Grocery. Then, together with husband Martin, they managed the Shelton Inn for many years. Most recently she was employed as a bailiff with the Mason County District Court. Hilde was a long time active member of Shelton Chapter 462 of the Women of the Moose. Soon after joining in 1971, then went on to earn her Star Recorder Degree in 1976 and her College of Regents Degree in 1978. With a volunteer army by her side, Hilde would prepare and cook the Oktobeffest dinner at the Moose Family Center every year, for as long as can be rdmembered. Along with her fraternal coworkers, she had crocheted hundreds of hats, scarves and afghans not only for the children of Moose Heart, Illinois, but for local families as well. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and get-togethers with family and friends. She loved to travel to England and Germany, to see her family and friends abroad. She enjoyed gardening, canning and crocheting. After retiring, the couple enjoyed doing woodcrafts together. She like bingo and hated "donating" to the Casino, but she adored her friends there... She loved to spend Friday nights at the Senior Center and listen to The Old Time Fiddlers. At home, she enjoyed chatting with her online friends and cuddling with her dog Dusty. Hilde was preceded in death by daughter, Sigrid Crabtree in 1974, grandson, Michael Oliver Jr. in 1990 and beloved husband, Martin Crabtree Sr. in 1997 and her brothers Christian, Hans, Bill, Hermand and Carl and sisters Marial Luise and Bennie; all from Germany.
