Lady I-lig :limbers close out winless, ready for next season
By DEAN SIEMON
While the 2010-11 season
for Shelton High School girls
basketball was one to forget,
head coach Nigel Warren re-
mains optimistic for the fu-
ture of the program.
"It's tough but this isn't
how it's going to be every
year," Warren said. "Give
me a couple more years and
we're going to change the
face of Shelton basketball."
In his first season as the
Lady Highclimbers coach,
Warren's squad finished the
season with an overall re-
cord of 0-20 and 0-14 in the
4A Narrows League. Shel-
ton was one of three winless
teams in the 4A classifica-
tion with Rogers (Spokane)
High School and Eisenhow-
er High School.
Warren said that enter-
ing this season, the expecta-
tions were that it was going
to be an up and down season
with players and coaches
trying to understand each
other.
"I see a lot of kids finally
coming together," Warren
said. "It took us a while to
get used to each other 'and
gel."
Warren said while there
were no wins on the team's
record, the team doesn't feel
like they were winless with
their efforts.
"When you've got kids
that are trying to compete
as hard as they can, that's
a win," Warren said. "We
didn't once came out and
gave up, no matter what we
were down by."
The season concluded at
home on February 9 against
Olympia High School (9-10,
7-7 Narrows League) in a
50-17 loss.
After trailing 19-0 in the
first quarter, Warren said
the_ Lady Highclimber de-
fense played better the rest
of the game, allowing eight
points in the second quarter
and 10 points in the fourth.
Offense was a big con-
cern throughout the season,
as the Lady Highclimbers
had 11 games scoring less
than 30 points - five of
those games, Shelton had
less than 20 points.
Shelton averaged 27.05
points per game while al-
lowing more than 61 points

season, is considered one of the potential leaders of next season's girls
basketball team.
per game.
"We played some good
defense," Warren said. "We
just couldn't put the ball in
the basket."
Junior Kandyce Bragg
led the team with five
points, including a three-
pointer from the top of the
arc. Warren said Bragg has
improved on offense this
season.
"I think she's going to
come out shooting next
year," Warren said.
With six seniors leav-
ing for graduation, Warren
said the star senior was Mi-
randa Graden, who may not
have been expected to play
as well as she did at the be-
ginning of the season.
"No matter what I asked
her to do, she would do it.
No questions asked," War-
ren said. "Having that type
of player and athlete-stu-
dent was just phenominal
for me."
Warren said he had the
opportunity to coach a
great class of seniors that
also included Madison Gaa,
Kristy Lee Nahley, Jackie
Gable and Becca Huisman.
"I wish I had these girls
another year," he said. "I
feel we could accomplish
more than we have."
Looking ahead, War-
ren said junior Jordanne
Krumpols (nicknamed lieu-
tenant) is the most likely to
take over as the leader of
the team next season.
"She's the same type
of player as Miranda
[Graden]," Warren said.
"You don't see it as much,
but I would say she is a
leader of the team now."
But Warren said the
point guard position would
be between Krumpols and
junior Clara Robbins (nick-
named general).
Two other returning
players include freshman
Jaycee Kingery and junior
Heather Sawyer, who are
both six-feet tall.
"We come back with two
big post players," War-
ren said. "I'm sad I lost six
seniors but I don't think
It's going to impact us too
much."
Warren said the return-
ing players are prepared to
work on their game tempo,
shooting and ball han-
dling during the offseason
in preparation of the first
practice of next season.
"I think that we can win
some basketball games next
year," he said. "The kids are
willing to learn right now
