Wild card berth for state meet granted to Shelton relay team
By DEAN SIEMON
Just when the Shelton High
School boys swimming and diving
team thought the season ended, the
school's 200-yard freestyle relay
squad has earned a wild card spot
at this weekend's 4A WIAA State
Championship meet.
The state championship meet is
scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., Fri-
day, at King County Aquatic Center
in Federal Way.
The top-16 in each event will re-
turn Saturday at the same time for
the finals - the top eight race for
the championship while the ninth
through 16th ranked individuals/
teams compete in the consolation fi-
nal.
Shelton's team of freshman An-
drew Grant, junior Indi Endicott
and seniors Jon Ramsey and Ricky
Rutledge finished ninth (1:35.35)
at the 4A West Central District III
meet on February 5 at Rogers (Puy-
allup) High School.
The top seven individuals/teams
in each event earn automatic berths
to the state championships - Shel-
ton was nearly two seconds from
the seventh place team from Curtis
High School (1:33.36).
Shelton head coach Chad
Youngquist said leftover positions
to state from the 24 overall positions
are then granted by time.
"So looking at it mathemati-
cally, we were a long way away,"
Youngquist said.
According to the official state
swimming website from the Wash-
ington Interscholastic Activities As-
sociation, District III earned seven
entries per event, while the second
most were three entries each be-
tween District I (Wesco) and District
II (Kingco).
"It really says our district is really
fast," Youngquist said.
The Highclimber swimmers for
the relay event returned to prac-
tice on Monday. Youngquist said
the small break won't hurt them
too much but, in fact, could benefit
them.
"We could seriously have some
big time drops," he said. "With hard
training, sprinters go a little slower
[during the season] because they're
trained for four races."
Youngquist said he is fairly op-
timistic for the four Highclimbers'
chances to advance to the second day
of competition.
The Shelton coach noted the
team's 200 free relay time was five
seconds faster than last season's dis-
trict time, which did not advance to
the state meet.
He also noted time improvements
for both the 400-yard freestyle relay
and 200-yard medley relay teams
between this season and last sea-
son's districts.
"So as a team, we're quite a bit
faster," Youngquist said.
Youngquist said Ramsey and En-
dicott have dropped two to three
seconds from their 50-yard splits,
while Rutledge has dropped another
second, despite having troubles with
the start and turns during districts.
Youngquist said Grant has been
improving his stroke, making it
less attacking and more technically
smooth.
"I certainly don't think that
they're slower," Youngquist said.
With the goal to advance to the sec-
ond day of competition, Youngquist
said that disqualifications could al-
wayss come into play.
"If our guys can go faster, like I
think they can, who knows?" Youn-
quist asked.
