By STEVE PATCH
To the chorused anthem of a
bygone era, the Highclimber var-
sity hoop boys choked the livin'
offense out of league-leading and
state-.ranked Olympia here Fri-
changin' defenses on 'em a little
bit.
"And it created some problems
for 'em..."
Two nights after he'd lit up '98
state-tourney rival Tumwater for
(lay, posting a 42-31 win for the 15 points in a three, point Oly

"A great, game, and probably
one of the tbur or five best defen-
sive ganges I've EVER seen in this
place," said Climber head coach
Mark Jensen, whose backlog of
Minidome duels goes back fully
30.some years - to when he was
an assistant to Climberville's now
legendary coach Terry Gregg.
"Th(' kids really stepped it up
and got after 'em out there. It was
just a great game."
AND A NOISY one, to() -as
befits that same bygone Gregg
era. indeed, even before the
Climbers throttled the usually
potext Bears to the tune of just
13 second-half points, the jam-
packed and partisan crowd was
well into its umpteenth lung-
swelling rendition of a chorus
pretty much synonymous with
those halcyon days of yore:
"DE-FI'NSE! DE.FENSE/ DE-
FENSE"
As fate would have it, though,
the Climbers hardly needed the
reminder. Seemingly unim-
pressed with the thct that their
14-2 visitors dwaribd them by a
couple inches at virtually every
position, they parlayed a swarm-
ing, base-line.to-baseline press
and surprisingly effective man-to-
man defense in the half court into
an offensive confusion on the part
of the Bears that was nigh on
palpable.
"WELL, WE JUST changed
some things up," said Jensen.
"You know, we'd watched 'era,
and they hadn't done a lot against
tlw press. So we thought anytime
we could score we could create
sore,, tempo issues and try to keep
was held to a paltry four points
by the Climbers.
Shelton guard Brian Bradley,
on the other hand, nearly tripled
his rival classmate's output, hit-
ting two huge three-pointers in
just three tries and finishing with
a team-high 11 points. And back-
court mate Aaron Brown con-
tinued his rather selective shoot-
ing in the face of clearly dispro-
portionate defensive attention but
still contributed eight points and
his usual all-league-caliber de-
fense and passing.
"And I thought (6-4 junior)
Owen Bacon was really tough on
the boards," added Coach Jensen,
noting that the Bears weren't
able to dominate that part of the
game like they had in their first
meeting with the Climbers, a 59-
37 Oly win the first week of Jan-
uary.
TUESDAY NIGHT the Climb-
ers played host to Aberdeen and
after a sluggish first half out-
scored the Bobcats 19-3 in the
third quarter and coasted to a 52-
42 win, improving their Rivers
League record to 10-3 with just
tomorrow night's game at Tum-
water remaining beibre district.
"You could tell we weren't in
school and were comin' off an aw-
ful big one," said Jensen. "I
thought we were real flat the first
half, but we played real well the
third quarter. And that was fortu-
nately enough to get us a win."
Six-five senior Jim Richardson
had a big game offensively for the
victors, hitting 8-11 from two-
point range and 1-1 from three-
en route to a game-high 22 points,
and he also had three steals.
The Climbers improved to 14-5
overall - best at this juncture in
Jensen's now four years at the
helm. Last year they came up two
wins shy of their first state berth
in 21 years and finished 15-8.

GLADHANDING CLIMBER FANS during pregame introduction Friday

and admittedly unexpected performance on the glass against the
theretofore board-bangin' Bears.
Girls 'freed'
Shot down by 10-of-12 shooting
at the line in the fourth quarter,
the Highclimber varsity hoop
girls wasted a third-quarter
comeback Thursday in Olympia
and lost 60-67 to the Bears.
The visitors battled to a two-
point lead with a 23-19 advantage
in the third period but couldn't
hold the lead as the Bears cashed
in big-time at the free-throw
stripe down the stretch.
Julia Eisentrout and Leigh-
Anne Stohl scored 19 and 18 for
the winners. The Climbers had
fully four in double figures -
juniors Liz de Waal Malefyt, In-
grid Rains and Willow Shanahan
with 15, 14 and 12 and sopho-
more Stephanie Davis with 10.
Both teams saw their records
go to 10-8 overall and 5-7 in
league.
In their first go-around this
year, back on January 5, the
Bears won 52-51 in overtime.
In Thursday's jayvee match-up
the Climbers wound up on the
short end of a 47-44 decision.

GLADHANDING CLIMBER FANS during pregame introduction Friday
is junior Owen Bacon, whose nine rebounds led the hosts' resurgent
and admittedly unexpected performance on the glass against the
theretofore board-bangin' Bears.
Girls 'freed'
Shot down by 10-of-12 shooting
at the line in the fourth quarter,
the Highclimber varsity hoop
girls wasted a third-quarter
comeback Thursday in Olympia
and lost 60-67 to the Bears.
The visitors battled to a two-
point lead with a 23-19 advantage
in the third period but couldn't
hold the lead as the Bears cashed
m big-time at the free-throw
stripe down the stretch.
Julia Eisentrout and Leigh-
Anne Stohl scored 19 and 18 for
the winners. The Climbers had
fully four in double figures -
juniors Liz de Waal Malefyt, In-
grid Rains and Willow Shanahan
with 15, 14 and 12 and sopho-
more Stephanie Davis with 10.
Both teams saw their records
go to 10-8 overall and 5-7 in
league.
In their first go-around this
year, back on January 5, the
Bears won 52-51 in overtime.
In Thursday's jayvee match-up
the Climbers wound up on the
short end of a 47-44 decision.
