Mat Climbers advance outta regionals

O
Shelton matmen Vie Garden-
hire and Nick Cronquist wrestled
their way onto the state-tourney
guest list last weekend, making
the cut in Saturday's regional
donnybrook at Tumwater High
School.
State vets both, the Climbers'
vaunted llth-graders earned
their repeat berths by dint of
top-four placement in their re-
spective weight divisions - 135
pounds for third-place-finisher
Vic and 190 pounds for second-
place-finisher Nick.
Vic fell behind by two points
in his opener against Franklin
Pierce junior Nick Orozco but
rallied to win 9-6.
THEN, AFTER falling into
the losers' bracket by way of a
5-8 loss to Sequim senior Chris
Shold, he clinched his return trip
to state by beating Washington
High School sophomore Mike
Pike 8-2 and copped the third
seed by outdueling old friend
Shaun Maloney of Tumwater 3-2.
You remember senior Shaun.
He's the guy Vic lost to only the
weekend before, in the battle for
sub-regional bragging rights.
As it happens, incidentally,
Vic's narrow vanquisher in Satur-
day's second round, Sequim's
Shold, ended up losing narrowly
in the finale -- to the same Adam
Halpin of Capital whom Vic beat
en route to second place at sub-
regionals.
"SO THEY'RE ALL really
close," says Roger McCausland,
the Climbers' first-year head
coach. He laughs. "It's like, 'Okay,
flip the coin - who's turn is it?'"
Seriously, says McCausland,
Vic wrestled tough and smart -
avoiding for the most part the
upper-body stuff that works so
notably to his advantage in the
Greco sport but has been known
to backfire on him in prep's so-
called collegiate version.
"I think Vic's really more of a
Greco wrestler, so he's more into
throws," says Coach. "In fact, a
lot o' kids do not like to tie up
with him, cuz they KNOW he's
not afraid to throw 'em if he gets
a hold of'em.
"It's like, 'Wooo-ooooo.' " He
laughs appreciatively.
AS FOR NICK - whose partic-
ipation at this stage was seriously
in doubt altogether on account of
the arthroscopic surgery he had
to have on his knee earlier this
year - he beat Bainbridge senior
Erik Schei 8-2 and Washougal se-
nior Ryan McDonald 9-4 to gain
the championship finals, where
he met the same Sterling Ulrich
of Chehalis who'd nudged him out
"You know,
he likes his
single-legs and
duck-unders.'
of the winner's circle at sub-re-
gionals.
This time Ulrich prevailed 10-4
- but it wasn't as close as it
sounds, says McCausland.
"NICK WAS WINNING the
match antil the third period," he
says. "Then he got tied up and got
behind.
"He was losin' 6-4 toward the
end of the match and tried to
shoot and got caught with a head-
lock. The kid really didn't have
the headlock on him, but it was
just one o' those things the ref
calls.
"Goin' back and lookin' at the
video from a different angle, I
could make a different judgment
on it. From the angle I was at,
you know, it was like, 'Well, it
looks like he's got him in a head-
lock and he's gettin' points.'
"But when I looked from the
other angle - which his mom
was videotaping and the ref was
looking from - I was like, 'How
could you give him points like
that.I?, t' " He laughs.
"But, you know, that happens.
See, you don't have mobility as a
coach when your kid's wrestling.
You just kinda have to sit in the
corner. And hopefully every angle
that you can see is to your advan-
tage and not to the other guy's."
IN ANY EVENT, says Coach,
Nick once again showed himself
to be precisely what the sport
calls for at this level.
"He's just a good, solid colle-
giate wrestler," says McCausland.
"You know, he likes his single-
legs and duck-unders and really
works the basics well - and has
really good strength.
"And plus also, you know, Nick
just has that overall athletic abili-
ty - you know, football and soccer
and all that. He's just really good.
You know, real good balance and
real good 'sports makeup,' I guess
you could say.
"He doesn't have an overall ex-
tensive dictionary of moves, you
know, but the ones he knows he
does really well."
VIC AND NICK, now 20-4 and
14-2 on the year, respectively,
launch their state tournament
campaigns at roughly 11:15 a.m.
and 12:15 p.m. tomorrow in the
Tacoma Dome.
They're already in rather elite
company, reminds their coach.
"You're talkin' about the top 16
kids in the state," he says. "It's a
good feeling to be able to be in the
top 16.
"Everything from there on is
just kinda, you know, gravy."
Both Climbers are reportedly
in fine health, incidentally.
"Injuries?" says Coach, sup-
pressing a laugh. "Aw, nuthin'
more than the usual bumps and
bruises you get from the little
mini war you go through out
there..."
