They're looking for a few good
grannies. Safeway and the Wash+
ington State Apple Commission is
sponsoring a contest to find an
on-the-go grandmother from the
Pacific Northwest whose lifestyle
personifies the healthful attrib-
utes of Washington state's famous
Granny Smith apples.
Cherie Myers, director of pub-
lic and government affairs for
Safeway, said the company is
looking for help to find a special
grandma who, like a Granny
Smith apple, has "a-peel."
"We're looking for grandmoth-
ers who are outgoing, live life to
the fullest, and are active in their
communities," said Myers. "We'll
be choosing a winner from our
area in April, who will win a $500
prize and a trip to the interna-
tional finals in Washington state
in May."
Myers said the person who
nominates the winning grandma
will also be invited to the finals.
At the Granny finale in May,
an overall "Search for Granny
Smith" winner will be selected.
She will be the commission's offi-
cial "spokes granny" tbr the next
year, appearing on supermarket
posters and traveling the U.S.
and Canada to promote apples
and healthy lifestyles.
Myers said all of the Safeway
stores in Washington, Alaska,
northern Idaho, and western
Montana have contest entry
forms available. People can also
write, in 100 words or less, what
makes their nominee special, and
send a non-returnable photo to:
Granny Smith, 203 Bellevue Way
NE, Suite 164, Bellevue, WA
98004. The deadline for receiving
entries in April 2.
Myers said the success of the
search depends totally on the
children, grandchildren, spouses,
or friends of noteworthy grand-
mas.
"Everyone loves grandmas, and
we're looking forward to hearing
about all the wonderful grandmas
in our area," she said.
By LORRAINE KELLY
After my column last week, I
received a phone call which led
me to Mr. Henry Bruemmer. Mr.
Bruemmer formerly owned the
land where we found the old cem-
etery. I called Mr. Bruemmer who
was nice enough to spend a few
minutes on the phone giving me
some information on the Dewatto
area and the old cemetery. He
told me the place he owned was
once part of the Nance homestead
which is probably why the little
cemetery is where it is. Mr.
Bruemmer also told me that he
made the arrangements for Cecil
B. Nance to be buried in this cem-
etery last year at the request of
Mr. Nance prior to his death.
Besides the Nance family
buried at this site, we found two
more fenced enclosures. The one
closest to the Nance enclosure
had two headstones:
Emily F. Cunningham, born
1835, died 1904, aged 69 years.
James Cunningham, born
1837, died 1910, aged 73 years.
THERE WAS NO other infor-
mation, so they could be husband
and wife, or brother and sister.
Another mystery to solve.
The third enclosure has three
headstones all for the Betz fami-
ly.
John D. Betz, born 1859, died
1922, aged 63 years.
Ellonora J. Betz, born 1867,
died 1943, aged 76 years.
Irving H. Betz, born 1874, died
1944, aged 70 years.
I HAVE JUST finished read-
ing Tales from a Tahuya Log by
Effie DeForest Boyer Knowleton
in which the Cunninghams, Betz,
and Mickelsons are all men-
tioned. I suppose there could be a
connection as Tahuya and Dewat-
to aren't that far apart by land or

They're looking for a few good
grannies. Safeway and the Wash+
ington State Apple Commission is
sponsoring a contest to find an
on-the-go grandmother from the
Pacific Northwest whose lifestyle
personifies the healthful attrib-
utes of Washington state's famous
Granny Smith apples.
Cherie Myers, director of pub-
lic and government affairs for
Safeway, said the company is
looking for help to find a special
grandma who, like a Granny
Smith apple, has "a-peel."
"We're looking for grandmoth-
ers who are outgoing, live life to
the fullest, and are active in their
communities," said Myers. "We'll
be choosing a winner from our
area in April, who will win a $500
prize and a trip to the interna-
tional finals in Washington state
in May."
Myers said the person who
nominates the winning grandma
will also be invited to the finals.
At the Granny finale in May,
an overall "Search for Granny
Smith" winner will be selected.
She will be the commission's offi-
cial "spokes granny" tbr the next
year, appearing on supermarket
posters and traveling the U.S.
and Canada to promote apples
and healthy lifestyles.
Myers said all of the Safeway
stores in Washington, Alaska,
northern Idaho, and western
Montana have contest entry
forms available. People can also
write, in 100 words or less, what
makes their nominee special, and
send a non-returnable photo to:
Granny Smith, 203 Bellevue Way
NE, Suite 164, Bellevue, WA
98004. The deadline for receiving
entries in April 2.
Myers said the success of the
search depends totally on the
children, grandchildren, spouses,
or friends of noteworthy grand-
mas.
"Everyone loves grandmas, and
we're looking forward to hearing
about all the wonderful grandmas
in our area," she said.
By LORRAINE KELLY
After my column last week, I
received a phone call which led
me to Mr. Henry Bruemmer. Mr.
Bruemmer formerly owned the
land where we found the old cem-
etery. I called Mr. Bruemmer who
was nice enough to spend a few
minutes on the phone giving me
some information on the Dewatto
area and the old cemetery. He
told me the place he owned was
once part of the Nance homestead
which is probably why the little
cemetery is where it is. Mr.
Bruemmer also told me that he
made the arrangements for Cecil
B. Nance to be buried in this cem-
etery last year at the request of
Mr. Nance prior to his death.
Besides the Nance family
buried at this site, we found two
more fenced enclosures. The one
closest to the Nance enclosure
had two headstones:
Emily F. Cunningham, born
1835, died 1904, aged 69 years.
James Cunningham, born
1837, died 1910, aged 73 years.
THERE WAS NO other infor-
mation, so they could be husband
and wife, or brother and sister.
Another mystery to solve.
The third enclosure has three
headstones all for the Betz fami-
ly.
John D. Betz, born 1859, died
1922, aged 63 years.
Ellonora J. Betz, born 1867,
died 1943, aged 76 years.
Irving H. Betz, born 1874, died
1944, aged 70 years.
