\ Consumer Library Area Mason County Federal Credit Union The Consumer Corner is planned as a regular feature of the new monthly publication. Items of general interest to credit union members will be chosen from the many fine books and magazines held in the consumer library. We welcome all members to utilize the library to research any consumer problem or question that occurs. Some of the areas covered in the library are: homes (buying, insuring and maintaining) -- foods (buying and preparing) -- transportation (buying, maintaining and insuring) -- wills, funerals -- and safety. HOW TO GET OFF MAILING LISTS: You can now put a stop to some of that junk mail you've been getting. Direct mailers who belong to the Direct Mail Advertising Association will delete your name from their mailing lists if you fill out a name-removal form. The service is on a blanket basis; if you sign the form, you're taken off all lists. However, the DMAA membership covers only about 65 percent of direct mailers, so you'll still get some junk mail. For a name-removal form, write Consumer Relations Manager, DMAA, 230 Park Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017. If you want to get on more lists, you can do that, too. Another DMAA form allows you to receive mail from any of 27 areas, such as travel, stocks, clothing. NEW FTC RULES - PROTECTION FOR CONSUMERS As a result of a new Federal Trade Commission rule, consumers now have three days to cancel a sale made with a door-to-door salesman. The rules apply to all goods and services costing $25 or more, and you are not penalized for a cancellation. Another ruling modifies the "negative option" sale. It used to be that book and record clubs would ~encl you whatever they were selling unless you returned a card refusing the item. Now you have 10 days to mail back this card, and if you still get the merchandise you can send it back for full credit plus return postage. VINEGAR IN YOUR WASHER? If you use a no-phosphate detergent, you may be washing the flame-resistant finish out of your child's pajamas. To remedy the problem, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends you add one cup of white vinegar to your rinse cycle. Maybe you've dreamed about "just one more closet" or a "room to store things in." Why be hung up? Give Lumbermen's a call or drop by. We'd be glad to exchange ideas with you. We'll even help you plan down to the smallest detail. And be sure to ask about our convenient payment plan to fit your budget, just like closets and storage space can be fitted to your home. /_RZE ENTEO BY 4F.
