County places Belfair bypass
on transportation plan
Commission votes
unanimously to add it
By NATALIE JOHNSON

The Mason County Board of Commis-
sioners voted unanimously Tuesday to
add a State Route 3 Belfair bypass to its
six-year Transportation Improvement Plan
(TIP).
"lSae commissioners have requested
that we add the Belfair bypass to our six-
year transportation plan to show support
for the project," said county road engineer
Melissa McFadden.
Placing the Belfair bypass on the TIP
does not mean the county will fund the
project, McFadden said.
"It helps us to keep it on our front burn-
er so to speak," Commissioner Tim Sheldon
said. "It helps us to leverage this project
with the state of Washingten."
Some Belfair residents commented on
the proposal.
Tahuya resident Jerry Hauth said he is
concerned that placing the bypass on the
TIP will commit the county to pay for part
of the project in the future.
"I would urge you as stongly as I can not
to put this on your TIP," he said. "Having
had numerous oportunities to interact with
the state ... I'm concerned that the state
will take advantage of this project on the
county's TIP and not go through with (fund-
ing) it. It seems to me that you're opening
the door to a drain on the county funds."
Hauth urged the commissioners to work
with state legislators to find funding for the
project instead.
Commission Chair Randy Neatherlin, a
Belfair resident, said a member of the state
"There's all kinds
of different
options that may
come up in the
future ... either way
it has to be in our
comprehensive
plan somewhere."
Randy Neatherlin, Mason
County commissioner
House of Representatives advised him to
put the project on the TIP plari.
"There's all kinds of different options
that may come up in the future ... either
way it has to be in our comprehensive plan
somewhere," he said.
Belfair resident Ken Van Buskirk said
that putting the bypass on the TIP plan
will help the project get noticed on the state
level.
"The widening project that's currently
ongoing (on State Route 3) was on Mason
County's six-year (TIP) plan," he said. "It's
not that it can't be done. As you well know,
I've been an advocate for the bypass for a
very long time."
Mason County staff and commissioners
say building a State Route 3 bypass around
Belfair ~11 ease rush hour congestion and
provide more pathways for law enforce-
ment and emergency services through Bel-
fair.
