Athlete of the Week
Senior
Bulldog's
skills improve

North Mason senior Jon Day
began wrestling three years ago
and said he's gotten better every
year.
"My first year, I was getting
used to it," Day said. "My sec-
ond year, I made it to regionals.
This year, it
all started
clicking with
my take-
downs and
everything.
It's unreal. I
didn't think
I would ever
make it (to
Day Mat Clas-
sic.)"
Day went
0-2 at Mat Classic XXV on Fri-
day at the Tacoma Dome.
Day began wrestling as a
sophomore when his friend, 2012
graduate Brian McCarty, sug-
gested he try it out.
"I started really liking it,"
, Day said. "I wish I would've
started earlier because it's been
so much fun these three years."
Although Day said he enjoyed
his time as a wrestler, he stated
he doesn't have plans to continue
in the sport after high school.
"College wrestling is at a
whole other level," Day said.
This is the second sport
Day has competed in so far this
year. In the fall, he was a cross-
country runner and this spring
he'll compete in the 1,600- and
800-meter events for the track
and field team.
Day described himself as an
endurance athlete.
While staying active with
Bulldog athletics, Day excels in
the classroom. He has a 4.0 GPA
and has been accepted to Wash-
ington State University and Or-
egon State University.
"I'm trying to figure out
where I want to go," he said. "My
coach says I shouldn't go to WSU
because it's easier to get into, but
I'm still looking."
Day said he applied at WSU
because a lot of his friends are
Cougars, while OSU sent him
several letters, so he checked out
the school and decided to apply.
Day said he hasn't decided on
a major yet, but knows he wants
to get a good job.
"Since I have a 4.0, I thought
I might as well go to college," he
said.
Along with his work in the
classroom, Day serves as the Na-
tional Honor Society treasurer.
He said physics was his favorite
class at NMHS.
When Day isn't in school or
participating in athletics, he said
he's sleeping.
"I'm always busy," he said
Day said he also likes to play
guitar and runs often.
One thing Day thought would
surprise most people about him
is that he shaved a Mohawk into
his hair the night before Mat
Classic XXV began.
"I'm a smart kid and it's un-
expected," he said. "But I made
it to state, so I wanted to get a
Mohawk."
