Fly on the Sideline
As 1,200 Washington state wrestlers
-- including seven from Mason
County -- prepared for Mat Clas-
sic XXV last week, the worldwide wres-
tling community received shocking news.
Wrestling had been recommended for
removal as one of the core 25 sports, be-
ginning with the 2020 Olympics, by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC).
When I heard the news, I was ap-
palled. Wrestling was one of the original
Olympic sports -- meaning athletes in
ancient Greece participated in it -- and
now it wouldn't be included in the games
anymore? How could that possibly be?
Members of the IOC have said the de-
cision wasn't made because of anything
being wrong with wrestling, but because
of what's right with the other sports.
Still trying to wrap my mind around
the fact that wrestling could possibly
no longer be an Olympic sport, I spoke
to the Mason County
coaches at Mat Clas-
sic XXV last weekend.
Shelton head coach
Chris Lacy said he
was surprised by the
recommendation be-
cause wrestling is an
original Olympic sport
and it's popular on
By EMILY every continent except
HANSON Antarctica.
"I think the wres-
tling community
wasn't represented," Lacy said. "There
are countries where wrestling is the na-
tional sport. I'm sure there's some politi-
cal thing going on, but it would be like
getting rid of discus or the marathon. I
can't see the Olympics allowing (wres-
tling to be removed)."
Lacy said wrestling is well estab-
lished everywhere in the world. A
column I read in The New York Times
by John Irving on this same topic said
people in 180 countries wrestle. Irving
said in the United States, "High school
participation has expanded by 40,000
wrestlers in the last decade; more than
270,000 high school students wrestle,
including more than 8,200 women. There
are 21 intercollegiate women's wrestling
teams and, since 1999, 95 new college
wrestling programs."
With that in mind, I spoke to North
Mason head coach Bill McCarty.
"It's a travesty," McCarty said. "The
idea that they could have subjective
sports like trampoline instead of wres-
tling?"
McCarty expressed disbelief that
wrestling has essentially been removed
to make room for golf.
"Golf has a grand slam, wrestling
doesn't have that," McCarty said. "Wres-
tling is a sport filled with people in tiny
gyms all over the world."
He said for wrestling, the highest
achievement is the Olympic gold medal,
and I agree. Unlike golf, wrestling
doesn't have major worldwide tourna-
ments multiple times per year.
Irving said the gold medal is the
highest achievement as well.
"Wrestlers from 71 countries went to
London last summer; before they could
compete, they had to win some of the
toughest qualifying tournaments in the
world," Irving wrote.
For one more perspective, I found
2012 Shelton graduate Johnathen
Dennis. The last time I spoke to Den-
nis, during the summer when he had
returned from two national wrestling

By EMILY HANSON

The Shelton Harriers crowned the 2013
Mason County Cross series winners Satur-
day after the conclusion of its two-race se-
ries.
Shelton High School junior Cody Wil-
liamson was named the winner after taking
second place in the 4-mile Podunk Race with
a time of 24 minutes, 52 seconds at Oakland
Bay County Park. Williamson won the first
race in the series with a time of 26:59 on
Jan. 12 at Lake Isabella State Park.
Jennifer Ford, 33, from Shelton, earned
the women's title after finishing in fifth
place Saturday with a time of 32:17. In the
first series race, Ford came in 10th place
with a time of 37:08.
Shelton Harriers event organizer John
Johnson said the three-loop course was
||
beautiful and a joy to run.
"I would describe the course as difficult to
race on," Johnson said. "All the participants
raced well. The runners ran the gamut from
national elite to first-timers."
He said the course had some big talent on
it Saturday.
"The sun came out and the honest effort
brought a smile to everyone's face," Johnson
said.
The first runner to cross the finish line
was Matthew Tebo, 23, from Seattle, who
finished the race with a time of 23:50.
Behind Williamson was Erik Heimann,
41, from Olympia, in third with a time of
31:15, and Skyler Lindeen, 24, from Grape-
view, with a time of 31:51.
The Harriers offered a 2.5K children's
race, which was won by William Johnson,
12, from Shelton, with a time of 11:19. The
first girl to cross the finish line was Laila
Hanson, 8, from Shelton, with a time of
14:43. Hanson's time was good enough for
fifth place.
"The seven kids that raced the 2.5 Kids
Cross showed some strength," Johnson said.
He said the Oakland Bay County Park is
a new park that is an important addition to
the Mason County Parks and Trails system.

seconds.
