by a 54.98 percent margin a new capital levy to en-
hance safety, improve the 55-year-old gym, and pay
the Shelton School District to educate its secondary
students.
All four measures on the ballot need a simple ma-
jority of 50 percent plus one vote to pass.
The most recent ballot count, on Feb. 15, had the
Southside School District's $450,723 capital levy
garnering 28~ yes votes, and 262 no votes. The Pio-
neer School District's $3.2 million capital levy had
received 1,428 yes votes, and 1,432 no votes. Voter
turnout was at 39.26 percent.
The final Count is scheduled to be announced at 4
p.m. today. The election is scheduled to be certified
Friday.
New Mason County Auditor Paddy McGuire,
presiding over his first election, said there are no
automatic recounts for local races under state law,

Paddy McGuire, Mason County Auditor
but five voters can request a recount within two
business days after the canvassing board meets on
Friday.
'~ Ve expect there to be a recount in the Pioneer
District," he wrote in emailed responses.to the Shel-
ton-Mason "County Journal.
If five voters request a recount, the canvassing
board of McGuire, Mason County Prosecutor Mi-
chael Dorcy and Mason County Commissioner Kev-
in Shutty would choose a date for the recount, Mc-
Guire said. The recount would probably take place
late next week or early the following week, and cost
25 cents per ballot for a hand recount or 15 cents
per ballot for a machine recount, unless the outcome
changes, he said.
As for the 39.26 percent turnout from Feb. 15,
"we are up some from that and should go up a little
more," McGuire said. "Overall, it is a good turnout
for an election where there was no active campaign-
ing for or against."
After hearing the initial results on Feb. 12, Pio-
neer Superintendent John Gummel said he was
"smarting a little" in an interview with the Shelton-
Mason County Journal.
"I've got to do a better job I blame myself," he
said. "I'll get the facts out."
If the measure fails, the Pioneer School District
will run it again, probably in November, he said.
Southside Superintendent Doris Bolender said
she is glad the "votes came through" for the 26-vote
margin. Getting information out to the community
on the need for the money is very important, to let
people know "you're not just asking to be asking,"
she said.
If the levy fails, the school board will decide if
and when to run it again, Bolender said.
Southside is among the school districts that are
negatively affected by the McCleary decision on
funding education, because it now collects less levy
money than before the decision, she said.
Bolender encourages anyone who has questions
to call her at 360-426-8437.
