MAT CLASSIC XXXi
By Justin Johnson

The Shelton High School
boys wrestling team wrapped
up a strong showing at Mat
Classic XXXI with three wres-
t e~ers earning state
Senior Ammon Anderson
capped off what was arguably
one of the best individual sea-
sons in Highclimber history
with a fourth-place finish, and
was Shelton's top finisher at
the Feb. 15-16 tournament at
the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma.
"This has truly been a spe-
cial season," Anderson said.
"This season, I have had to
step up as the leader on the
team and really set the tone
for how our team should be
performing during tourna-
mentsand at dual meets. I felt
that ifI wasn't in the finals, or
winning my dual match, I was
letting my team down. This
really pushed me and moti-
vated me to try and win every
match possible. Winning not
only felt good for me, but set
an expectation and a tone for
where the team should be."
Anderson earned a pin in
his opening-round bout with
Mount Spokane High School's
Nick Dallas and a 6-4 decision
over Cleveland High School's
Dejovnnie Arns in the second
round.
Anderson fell to Mercer Is-
land High School's Donn How-
ard in his quarterfinal match,
but rallied with three straight
pins to advance to the third-
place match.
"I lost in the quarterfinals
at state and it devastated me,"
Anderson said. "I was thinking
about what I could have done
different and how I couldhave
stopped some of his moves.
From my coaches, teammates,
friends and family, I was mo-
tivated and dedicated to get
the next best thing. I went on
all by pin, and this allowed me
to break the school record for
pins in a season. I lost my last
match, but knew that there
was nothing to be ashamed-
of because of the season I had
put together.
"I am grateful for the op-
portunity to have been the
captain of an awesome team
with three medalists and
three participants. It was tru-
ly the greatest sports season
of my life and will be the most
meaningful in my life because
of the lessons I have learned."
Anderson, who finished his
senior season with 37 wins
and 27 pins, went 5-2 during
the tournament.
"Ammon's senior season
has been nothing short of his-
toric," Shelton coach Chris
Lacy said. "He inspired his
team and our fans for his en-
tire career, and this continued
at Mat Classic XXXI. Ammon
wrestled Dejovnnie Arns of
Clevelend High School twice
in the tournament-. Their first
contest was in the second
round and Ammon won 6-4
in a close match. On day two,
they paired up again. Ammon
made a slight adjustment that
allowed him to get his control
tie. The match was not close
the second time, and the Shel-
ton fans roared as he earned a
fall in the second period."

Allred and Cameron MacA-
levy finished sixth and eighth
in their respective weight
classes, while Braden MacA-
levy and Trevor Meier each
earned at least one win.
Cameron MacAlevy earned
an 8-6 decision in his opening-
round bout at 120 pounds and
pinned Everett High School's
Daniel Ramierez in the sec-
ond round to advance to the
quarterfinals, where he fell to
Mountain View High School's
Noah Messman. Cameron bat-
tled back through the consola-
tion bracket to the seventh-
placematch.
"Cameron's first-round
match against Antonio Ramos
of Kennewick (High School)
may have been his most im-
pressive win of the tourna-
ment," Lacy said. "Going into
the third period, Cameron
was down 4-0. He always gets
stronger late in matches, and
was able to rattle off eight
points in the third period to
win the 8-6 victory."
Allred went 5-3 in eight
matches at 145 pounds, in-
cluding a pin in just 23 sec-
onds in his first consolation
match, to finish sixth.
"A 13-3 major decision over
Ingraham's Simion Mayo-
Carillo highlighted many of
Robbie's strengths as a wres-
tier," La~y said. "That match
could have easily been very
close, but he won every tough
scramble in a very physical
match.-
Mount Spokane High
School won the 3A team title,
while Shelton finished 23rd
overall.
The Highclimbers went 15-
14 in 29 matches.
"Mat Classic XXI was a
great experience for us," Lacy
said. "Our wrestlers and fans
had an amazing experience.
We wrestled Mount Spokane
in five of our six first round
matches. They ended up be-
ing the team champions and
we went 2-3 against them. We
went 5-1 in the second round.
I think the final eight wres-
tlers in each weight class were
as tough as ever."
continued from B-1
She wrestled just one tournament
after being medically cleared and go-
ing through the requisite 12 practice
sessions required by the Washington
Interscholastic Activities Association
(WIAA). Lacy finished second at sub
regionals to qualify for the state meet.
"It was hard to train a whole lot this
season with my leg injury and being
cleared only about a month and half
ago," Lacy said. "I'm extremely lucky
that I 'had the opportunity to even
wrestle this year and that's something
I'm super grateful for."
Lacy fell in the semifinals to Thom-
as Jefferson High School's Goddess
Ma'alono-Faletogo by fall, and then
lost a decision to Edmonds-Woodway
High School's Vatoria Keyes in the con-
solation semifinals. She defeated West
Valley High School's Jasmine Fryer by
injury default in the fifth-place match,
giving her a 4-2 recordin six matches.
"I'm super excited for how many
girls we got to state," Shelton girls
wrestling coach Rodgar Garrick said.
"This is a high-water mark for us.
With that being said, I'm a bit upset
for a few girls, just because I know
they had higher goals for themselves.
"Our seniors, Claudia (Ramirez)
and Quinn will really be missed. Clau-
dia for her great leadership this year,
and Quinn for showing these young
ladies how to compete at the highest
level. She is a special young lady. I am
super excited for the future, for the la-
dies coming back next year. I am sure
they will use this experience gained
and use it next year."
Shelton's Julia Ragsdale bounced
back from a last-second pin in her
opening-round 100-pound match to
win three straight matches and ad-
vance to the second day of competition.
Ragsdale won with an 85-second pin in
her first consolation match, and then
earned 8-5 and 6-2 decision.
Ne'a Moffett (1307 went 2-2 winning
a 10-7 decision over Burlington-Edison
High School's Natalie Albright and an
injury default over Reagan Portmann
of Willapa Valley High School.
Miracle Home (115) and Jazlind
Warren (170) each had a pin victory.
Union won the girls team title, fin-
ishing with 135 points in the 164-team
field. Shelton finished 33rd overall.
